Cayotes

What would be the best method to use for hunting Cayotes and what Cal. would you prefer? New to Canada and methods used in North America, so pretty desperate for info.

Johan Malan...I believe there's been a thread or more on coyote hunting on G&G. Have you tried using the "search" button above to find something previously posted on G&G on that subject?

I'm not a coyote hunter but I watched the "History Channel" T.V. show once on that subject. Seems that they were using .308 or larger caliber with scopes and were calling them in with some kind of sound emulating a stressful rabbit or something else.

I would guess that a 30-30, 30-06, .308, or similar caliber rifle using 165 grain rounds or more would be sufficient in most cases.

Smaller calibers would be fine for coyotes as well. 243 Winchester is a good example.

I just checked on previous threads on G&G on coyote hunting. Found a bunch. Give it a try. Just type in Coyote hunting in "search.

Coyotes

Most ranchers here in Colorado have used lever action 30-30's.
I like 223 and recently bought a Bushmaster Dissapator. A friend and I will be out hunting coyote in about two weeks.
I have also used my Browning A-Bolt 223 WSSM on coyote. Brings them down in a hurry. Very flat trajectory for up to about 200 yards.

I use a .223 (bushmaster carbon-15) with great results up to a hundred yards if your looking to shoot from further than that i would suggest a 308 just my opinion!

ive taken em with a 22mag before...worked rather well too! good shot placement is paramount with the smaller rounds.

Well 308 ammo is way to expensive compared to 223 besides then I might as well blow them to !!!! with my 30-06. I suppose 223 is the way to go. At what ranges did you shoot them with the 22mag whirl?
What metods do you use to hunt them?

well i havent hunted any in years, but when my cousin and i would have a problem with one we would generally bait it out,sit in a blind and take him usually bout dusk. i never really measured the distance. id guess it was about 50 or 60 yards though. we would usually set up in the wood line just behind the barn and set the bait between the chicken coop and the tack room.

what are you paying for the 223 ammo Johan? I was paying $6.00 for a box of 50 of the copper jacketed boattails at SIR in Winnipeg.

Johan, i just wanna stress that the 223 for $6 was the copper jacket ammo, the only thing that you can legally shoot with that stuff is targets and i'm pretty sure that they are good to go for predators like coyotes. check with your local conservation officers on that though. as for the hunting, i live outside of Inwood, which is north of Winnipeg by about 45 minutes. whitetail hunting is excellent in my area, it's not a resort area by far, farming community, so the deer aren't afraid to go for a stroll. go west for about an hours drive to Lundar and that is where my bro in law took a nice big elk. bent the cross rail at the front of the box of his pickup, and pretty much wrecked his tail gate winching the that bad boy on. lucky !!!!!!!. so hunting is not too bad at all.

Hoping to do some coyote hunting in a bigger way this year here in Newfoundland. Will be using a Tikka T3 Lite in .223 Rem. I would love to hear some stories of what works for you and hopefully some pics.

I have a problem like this, having lost my first goat to coyotes two weeks ago. I would like to set up and get him like you describe. My question is, what was the bait that you used? Thanks,
eljay

well the first bait we tried was a dead chicken, but it didnt get em in. so we had a dog that had just had pups so when it got close to dusk we would put the pups in a box close to the tack room door and chain the mother up close to the house. i didnt figure it would work, but when the pups started whining for mama it wasnt long before we saw one start making his way up the lot. i cant take credit for that idea,my cousin thought that one up. but now a days they have those predator calls at walmart. im sure they would work better than screaming pups...but the pups worked pretty good! lol

Well, we don't have any puppies around here, and have sold all of the kid goats who might have worked like your pups, so guess I'll have to go to WalMart and try to get a predator call. Thanks for the input, all advice is welcome and appreciated!

That would be great! I need something like that. I've been thinking about a location, but haven't got that figured out yet, either. Wild hogs are also becoming a problem, being seen and shot on a ranch about two miles from us. I've heard that, if you can "sting" them, they'll never come back to that spot, as they're terrified of hornets. Don't know if this is true or not, but may try it if they get on my place. I wonder if you lure coyotes into a spot, then shoot one or more of them, if they then avoid that spot in the future. Anybody got any ideas on that? Again, thanks for the inputs!
