I am new to the site here, but have poked around a few times reading and learning what you guys have to say am I am very impressed. Anyways I just got myself a Ruger #1 varmit in the 22-250 and love it, shoots nice and I think it should work great for coyotes and wolves here in Alberta. Again the only down fall is that it is heavy. |

Jumping around tends to indicate wanting a new gun over having a specific use for a gun. That or constantly learning more and more new things about what's out there and how they work, in which case it's good to really let it sink in and try to understand as much as you can. I'm telling ya, you shouldn't group the Mini-14 in with any of the bolt actions. If you're not sure which, really try to decide what you expect to use it for and how. For example, unless you'll be carrying it around in the woods, I'd highly recommend a bull barrel for best accuracy and lowest recoil. If you expect to rapidly reload and fire again under pressure, ie on running game, you want something with a decent extractor and ejector. Either a Mauser type like a Ruger, CZ, or Win M70, or a lever-claw like a Weatherby Vanguard. If you want ultimate accuracy at minimal price, Savage/Stevens is probably the best call, but you sacrifice mag reliability in some models. If you want good reliability, good accuracy, and maximum strength, Remington 700 or 7 are probably the best options.

With a bolt action, the action isn't as long as a semi-auto. That way you can have a longer barrel on a gun the same size and probably lighter.

Want a dead serious Varmint caliber-and you reload?- the 220 Swift is still king. If you want a good varmint caliber with cheap ammo-223 is choice. 22-250 is awesome no doubt about it. But factory loads are still high in my book. The new 204 Ruger has shown amazing accuracy as well and great BC. It's still new, and factory loads are costly. Just depends on the seriousness you want to put up. If you reload..220 Swift-Hands down! |

I ran a few more rounds through my Savage 12BVSS yesterday after a good scrubbing and I have to say the magazine on mine is not the problem I had early thought. I think the issue was cleaning it and oiling it and letting it wear it some. I was only able to shoot at 75 yards but, even with that, I shot one ten round volley at a life size outline of a prairie dog and all but one round was in the kill ring. I am impressed with the gun and the .22-250 round. My buddy went along to sight in a new scope of his and I gave him the chance to also shoot the Savage and he is STILL raving about the accutrigger (which I have set at around 2.4 pounds according to my pull). What I haven't told y'all is that I was thinking...emphasis on thinking...of ordering the 12BVSS from Wal-Mart for the tune of $616 or so but Sportsman's Warehouse in Phoenix beat their price by nearly $50 (inlcuding tax considerations). I realize that there are several makers of fine .22-250 rifles out there but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Savage and I would encourage everyone to consider the Savage line when buying.

Wal Mart keeps its own records of firearm purchasers in addition to the legally required ones. Their higher management inspects them. This is a very big reason not to shop at Wal Mart. They can sell guns on one hand and sell your info with the other. HCI, VPC and the like would sure love to have a registry in their hands, even if illegal. Reasons to buy only from stores that fully support RKBA, not just have trumping up a few pro-sportsman activities.

| Best Choice in my opinion
Definitely a 223 in any known brand name. Cheap ammo is very important if you plan on having fun and using the rifle very much.

I use a Cooy model #60 side mount scope and I fill my chuck chilly pot every time. The Red Bellyed Marmut is a tough brute to drop so it is a head shot every time. In my aeria I can get close to the little buggers so somthing larger is a bit of an over kill. I use my Cooy for every thing up to a fox coon scunk but if you cannot get within 100 yards a 22 hornet to a 22-50 is your tast Browning has the best warenty a frend of mine called them and no sooner did he complain they were at his door.:drink:

I like 223 and 223 WSSM. The 223 WSSM is a Browning A-Bolt. The 223 is a Bushmaster AR-15. Both great firearms for varmints. The difference is flat distance shooting or cheap shells. Both are fun guns.

If you want accuracy, don't fool around. You can still get a Sako .222. Try to find one made in the 1960's with Bofors Steel.
