What are you going to hunt with it? Personally, I'd go with the .223. Accurate and cheap to buy and reload. That's a creepy avatar you've got there, by the way. |

.220 Swift is probably the better choice but I'd go with the .223 because of ammo cost too

All depends on what kinda money you are willing to lay out. Personally, if you want a load of fun and good bang for your buck, get any .223 rifle (I would prefer an AR15 based rifle with a 20" barrel") with a Leupold Mk4 MR/T (http://www.leupold.com/products/tact...products2.htm). The Leupold has built in BDC for 5.56/223 and also lit up reticle. There are a lot of cheaper rifles available in .223 - some of the handi-rifles or even some of the really cheap break open units from Wal-mart are ok. All depends on what you want to do. .223 has very little recoil, easy to choot and about as many different bullet types and ammunition options as you could wish for - if you get the AR15 based rifle, you can buy a case of 1000 rds for around $120! |

17 sucks in wyoming. Wind makes it pointless. Ask me how I know.

The accutrigger is sweet, also...adjusted all the way down and it's just fantastic. A BIG draw-back is that the gun weighs in at 10 pounds...add the weight of a scope, sling and ammo and it's close to 12 pounds. Another draw-back is that you have to outfit the rifle with a scope and I put a Burris Fullfield II 6.5 - 20 X 50 for another 3-4 hundred so the it's become an expensive shooter. But I knew that going in so it's not a complaint. It's not the gun to carry around a hundred acres but dang...it's sweet. It's also rated at 4 shot capacity but I got 5+1 out of mine.

All depends on preference then. Might come down to if you want a button or fixed ejector or something like that. Savage is THE name in accuracy though. Magazines aren't the best though.

I'd say the only thing Winchester has on Savage is magazine reliability. And action speed. For one-shot kills on smaller critters, not the biggest deal. For something that has good accuracy as well as better extraction and feeding, I'd suggest a Remington 700 or Weatherby Vanguard.

I did find that if the rounds were not completely to the rear there were some feed issues. It's nothing serious if you know the trick but, then again, there shouldn't be a trick involved. It's still a great lil gun and I'm hoping on completing the sighting-in today since the past two days were quite windy. Wednesday I did manage to get the scope pretty darned close before the winds kicked up and, perhaps, I'll also get finished breaking the barrel in today.
