| My favourite cat.
This is the biggest cat that I have shot yet, I got it last year near the quarters I stay in on a property in QLD. We had been trying to get these !!!! cats that had moved into the nearby sheds and we were asked to try get this big bugger that the property owner said was getting around he said it was really big and we would know it by its bob tail. Well after 3 days of squealing in small cats and kittens I just couldn’t get a shot at this cunning bugger when after getting home after going for a stalk I saw it 100m away from the back of the Ute I was on. I banged on the roof and jumped down grabbing my gun and making my way around some cover to sneak up on it. I removed my gun from its case and dropped a couple of SSG’s into it and when I cleared the cover it took of running right past me at about 60m I took aim and fired and it did the best cartwheel I have ever seen a cat do. As the saying goes when it comes to skill and luck I will take luck every time. |

The feral cat.... I read a number of books written by a fella called Len Beadell who is sadly no longer with us. Len surveyed and made the Gunbarrel highway and other famous out back roads after WW2. While in Western Australia, an Aboriginal Elder told him of the feral animals that inhabited the area. He said: ` !!!!! cat came first` long time later, pig came. before White fella.. It is quite possible cats were there 400 years ago, from Dutch shipping ( or even Portuguese as well ) travelling close to the Western coast. I`m sure Speedy will verify this, there are some truly sobering sized feral cats out in the sticks. I don`t mean anything you`d mistake for a panther- cougar or puma. Just boof headed, big shouldered things. They are HARD to shoot, the real deal ones way out. Not fluffy the part persian suburban escapee. There have been some really diabolical decisions made here over the years, in the late 1800`s early 1900`s. After rabbits were released ( they were brought over to give the early settlers a touch of home ) and soon got totally out of hand, some bright spark decided to take several cats ( I forget how many, a bloody lot anyway ) out west to Cobar and let em go! Argh! They have gone through our native wildlife like a dose of salts. I have nothing against cats as pets, but I won`t hesitate to drill one like Speedy has, dogs either if they shouldnt be there where I am shooting. Its rare to arrive at a western property and not get instructed by the owner: `See these dogs ? ( an arm swept over his dog pens or dog troop on his landcruiser ) any dog other than these, shoot..... |

Amazeing 6 weeks ago a stray cat had a litter of 5 kittens in my shop, to be honest I was afraid she might attack me if I got close to them. So I let her raise her babies and as the days went by she got use to me and I got to where I could pet her. By the 5th week I was ready for them to leave, but short of killing them I didn't know how I was going to get rid of them. About the middle of the 6th week they left, vanished I don't know where they went but I am releived there gone. I guess I'm tender hearted. I could'nt displace them. And it was cool watch'en the little one's play. |
