Lightbulb long range varmint rifle

hey guys. since you guys have been so helpful with some of my other questions, i thought i might ask you for your opinions on a project i am thinking about undertaking over the next year. i had been thinking about setting up a long range target/varmint rifle. now i know that there are plenty of such quality rifles to be bought on the market already, but i thought that building up the system myself would give it the personal value that you can only get when you do something yourself.

here's what i'm thinking so far:

1. i'd like the base to be modifiable from the beginning

2. the caliber i choose needs to be able to be effective against small vermin (woodchuck, hare, squirrel) and still be able to produce effective results to larger predators (coyotes, ferel dogs, the IRS guys...just kidding)

3. maximum effective range should be at least 400 yards

As of right now, those are some things i am considering for this project. if you have any input, i would certainly appriciate it.

Midwayusa.com has plenty of stuff for building guns from the ground up. You can get Remington 700 actions, Mauser actions, etc. They also offer any kind of barrel or stock that you can think of. No offense to Lefty O, but I'd go with a bolt action for longer range use

I agree with the heavy barrel AR.

Olympic Arms makes an upper in 223/243/25 WSSM... From what I've been reading, that 243 WSSM is a heck of a round. It has a nice flat trajectory, good hitting power, and a .223 20 round mag holds 7 rounds of it. Not bad.

The regular .223 would be alright too, but at longer ranges the 243wssm would retain a lot more hitting power.

What ever you end up with make sure you get a really good quality scope
with enough power to see those little varmits with. No matter what cal you chose if you don`t scope it properly you`ll be sorry, IMO.

Savage with Accu-trigger in 22-250 should reach out and touch those vermin.

Check out the Les Baer 204 Ruger AR in On Target magazine Feb/Mar. With a Leapold 6.5-20x40mm, its a sweet AR in 204! At 4243 fps@1280 ft lbs. Drops 29" @ 500yds. Thats compared to 39" with the 223. If i got a my first AR, this would be it. Sod rats beware!

Cz 452 2e Zkm .22 Lr

Broke mine in today. Wow! 1/4 clover leafs at 50, 3/4 to 1" at 100, rang the steel at 225 yds. Federal champs. IRON SIGHTS! Hope the scope doesn't mess it up. Priced $221.00 @ Walmart, cheapest most accurate small game getter. Can't hear it over 1/4 mile. It's a 22 laser!

Buy a standard Rem 700 SPS/BDL/ADL in 22-250, buy an after market barrel (fluted, heavy contour), Get a new stock from McMillian or Hogue, get a scope from Leupold (Mark IV series). than get a bipod. Voila.

The original post is pretty much what I wanted too:

1) modifiable
2) effective against small vermin and larger predators
3) effective range at least 400 yards (300 yards enough for me)

I have several .223 and feel quite good with them out to 250 yards before accuracy seems to be effected by wind, and running out of steam.

So I bought a Rem 700 Sendero (bull barrel) in 25-06 caliber. Replaced the stock with Choate sniper stock and timney trigger. Currently have Schmidt and Bender fixed X8 scope on it. Was hoping to make it a 300 yard crow popper but just can't find the right "light" bullet yet. I've settled on the Hornandy 120 grain for coyote, & ocassional deer but the small varmint bullet evading me. Really wanted the Sierra 90 gr BT to work and kept working up loads to no avail. Just could not get under the magic 1" group. The answer might be in the 100 grain bullet.

I'm going to keep reloading the 25-06. Somewhere out there is the right combination of bullet, powder, primer, brass. I just haven't found it yet.
The 120 gr will shoot all day into 1.25" at 100 yards without flyers but that ain't no 300 yard crow buster. My .223's can shoot that all day at 200 yards.

A fun project that suits your needs is to buy a .308 remington 700 and changing the stock, barrel etc. so it is a m40.

Thumbs up

I'm selling my Model 70 featherweight 243WSSM in favor of my AR because I'm not very happy with the Winchester. That fat cartridge just doesnt want to feed right, maybe just my gun. The WSSM is !!!! on wheels, though. I've gotta get one of the Olympic Arms 243WSSM uppers! The 243WSSM comes in 55,95, and 100 grainers, so maybe O.A. will have the right twist in their barrel for the heavier ones.

Personally for a strictly Varmint setup like what your looking into, I would go for a 220 Swift. Savages actions are easy enough to work with, and cheaper too. For the $$ building on a Savage action is very worthwhile, and well worth the time.
MidwayUSA - Adams & Bennett Barrel Savage 110 Series 220 Swift Varmint Contour 1 in 14" Twist 24" Chrome Moly Blue

Though a good Remington 700 would be my choice if I were to put the money into it. Just my 2cents.
