A 223 H&R "Ultra Varmint" with laminated stocks and 24" bull barrel.. around $250... H & R Firearms: Firearms: Rifles - Ultra Hunter/Ultra Varmint Or a regular Handi rifle would do to..around $200. But I prefer the "Ultra" models. H & R Firearms: Firearms: Rifles - Superlight/Synthetic |

.223 or .22-250 are both ideal, but the .243 is more versatile if cash flow is a problem.

I believe they won't fit any high pressure barrels to any SB-2 receivers (centerfire rifle receivers) dating from 96' back. But from 99' on your in the clear and can order all but the 10ga and 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter barrels. Yes It is a good idea. TC has a lot of marketing for an all in 1 gun...but truth be told, you can do the same thing with an NEF/H&R Handi rifle. Go for it. |

Which isn't always with handloads either. Winchester White Box 45gr JHP's shoot excellent though both my 223s as many 223 Handi owners have found. I have taken groundhogs up too 375 with the little 45gr bullets, but any farther than that the wind can play alot and blow that little guy around. Both mine are the older 1-12 twist. Now they have switched to a 1-9. Which by all means should spin out the heavier pills better, but the Micro groove rifling is a little shallow. Still it will shoot the 55grain offerings better than the older 1-12's for the most part. | |

I use a Savage 24" heavy barrel, 1:9 twist and reload with Barnes 70gr triple shock. I also use my .243 Remington 700 VLS as it is a more versatile caliber and maybe worth considering for your overall shooting and hunting needs.

I have personally not sent a handi rifle back to the factory, but I know people that have. First off you have to make sure that they have the barrel in stock that you want, otherwise you will end up waiting a lot longer. Other then that, the time that I have heard ranges from 2 weeks at the shortest, to about 5 weeks at the longest. One other thing, if you have a trigger jog done, and you send a handi back to the factory, they will nicely reset the trigger back to the original pull weight. Something to watch out with. I would go with the .243 personally, you have a better range of animals that you can take with the .243. I know that with head shots it work wonders with hogs, and it is not bad with body shots either. Chester Oh yeah, with a handi rifle, if it start as anything other then a center fire rifle (shotgun, muzzleloader), you can not have them put on center fire rifle barrels. But if it started as a centerfire it can get any barrel that you want. Last edited by chester12; 12-28-2006 at 11:18 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

I think that a Saiga .223 would do the job.

The .223 is the cheaper one for ammo... but it's a little light in 20+ mile an hour winds... I was hunting in Oct. SD for prarie dogs, using both 22-250 and .223 both were being blown all over.... ended using a 7.62x54r Romak 3 sniper rifle... it worked great...ammo's cheap but the gun will run $700+ Have fun.......

| hey man
hey man i hunt with a .223 now i load a hot load with 24.1 reloader7 that will take anything down i use a v max bullet by hornady and i will tell you that it wont through a groudhog at 50yrds ... if you want to hunt cyote use this load its pretty acc but be carful that you dont overload past that... i love my 223 i shot aginst a 204 bench rests and a 22-250 and i out shot them.... stevens 223 is very cheep maby $250 and i reload.... if you want to save the hide trust the v max at 300 even at 75-100 will not pass all the way through... i would pick a 223 over a 204 anyday Quote:
