Magnum if I thought that there would be any suffering I wouldn't use it. I believe in a fast kill without the animal having to suffer, thats why only perfect head shots with the 17. He owns other property all woods also that any weapon can be used on but very few deer there. This property is full of deer, turkey, bear, coyote & bobcat. If he plants corn the deer and bear do a job on his crop. There are a lot of does, way to many for the buck doe ratio. As far as bear, people come from all over the state to hunt the bear, huge population of them, it's nothing to see sows with three cubs everywhere you go. I've killed a 734lb.

There was a bear taken by a guy in Tahoe City just outside of the Resort area of Lake Tahoe. The bear was so big it looked like a Grizzly. I think it weighed close to 800lbs. There was a picture of it at the Sportsman Warehouse in Reno. It said he shot it with a 158gr .357 mag.
I would want at least a 155mm Howitzer battery

I don't want to debate the use of the round on coyotes. I just wanna add a little input. When I bought my Savage 93R17 and added a Bushnell 3-9X32, I thought all it wuold be for is plinking. But then the very same question crossed my mind. For every person that said yes there always seemed to be one that said no. Then I went on a site that showed some guy trying to test ballistics in different ways. He took 2 metal coffee cans put a roll of paper towels in it then filled it with water. He shot 1 with the 17gr Hornady and 1 with the 17gr CCI, basically same bullet different name (CCI loads the Hornady and also the Federal, I believe). The Hornady punched 2 small holes in the can and the CCI blew a BIG hole on the exit side!?! I also went on a site where a guy posted 10 pictures of Coyotes killed with distance and weight of animal listed for each. At one of the gravel pits I shoot at, there was an abondened car there. I shot at the door w/the CCI 17gr 17hmr TNT and a Federal 40gr solid lead 22lr, from about 65yds. The 22lr put a dent the size of a quarter and about 3/8" deep. The hummer put a hole right thruough it! By the way this an OLD beat up shell of a car. I also plink at broth cans filled w/water then frozen (my kids love doing this). The 17 will knock it 2-3 ft in the air with the exit side spread open. Did I mention I love shooting this gun?

I own the 17 HMR it is a whonderful round that has many uses... varment hunting is one of them, and in MD where I live yotes are considered varments. If you are comfortable w/ yer' 17 rig tthen use it. I personally use a Winchester Stealth II chambered in 223 WSSM... out to 650-700 yds them yotes are turned into yoteburger

I like the closer range stuff, gets the juices flowing more! You know the feeling of creeping up as close as you can get, then pressing the muzzle of yer gun right up to his eyeball and pulling the trigger with the anticipation of what happens next! Jus kiddin!!!

A friend of mine shoots a .17 Ackley Improved. I know this is a bit faster than the HMR, but he shot a coyote with it at about 100 yards. That little 17gr. bullet hit Mr. yote in the side of the head. It never came out the other side, but it opened up a 3" split in the top of his skull and blew all of his brains out, empty head. I was impressed.

Ok guys since I'm new to yote hunting, what is the best time of year to do it, spring, summer, fall or winter? HELP

PALLADIN 8 you should see what a 155 does to an elephant. As an FO in Nam I shot a few of them with a 105 and a 155. Then I don't know where the heck all the gooks came from to get the meat.

PS: Most of you probably know why I killed elephants in Nam.

VC used them for hauling ammo and supplies, thats why all FO (forward observer) killed them. We didn't like doing it but we had.

Thumbs up HEAD SHOT

TRY SHOOTING THE YOTES IN THE HEAD THEY DROP LIKE A SACK OF BRICKS. IVE BEEN SHOOTING SOME FOX WITH MINE AS WELL AND IF YOU LUNG SHOOTEM THEY RUN LIKE IF YOU SHOOT A DEER WITH AN ARROW BUT THE WILL DIE. ONE THING I NOTICE YOU WONT GET A BLOOD TRAIL BECUASE THE FUR SUCK UP THE BLOOD. AND DONT USE A FMJ IF YOUR NOT GOING TO HEAD SHOOT TRY THE HORNDAY 20 XTP OR ONE OF THE 17GR VMAX OR TNT LOADS. GOOD LUCK

17HMR not so good in my opinion. Bullet construction isn't suitable for penetration. A 17 Remington is a different animal, 25 gr bullet going around 4k , usually makes one hole and seldom comes out. The animal doesn't run off either. My 2cents worth
