Well, I haven't read the whole thread, but unless I was sure I could outrun the thing, I would never go after any predator with anything I could not be sure of dropping it with one shot. Word on the street here is that .22-250 is the ultimate varmint round and that include coyotes.

Another thing I should throw in, on windy days, good luck. You better know your equipment. That little round, will fly all over the place. I still like the round but, as someone who has sniper training, I do know how to comp for the wind.
I GOTTA call BS on this!. Not bashin....but 300 YARDS with a .17? Sorry, but it just aint a normal shot, not with a .17. Unless you lobbed it in like a mortar round. Can I ask where you took your Sniper training?...A 300-yard shot with a .17, is NOT ethical.....it's impossible!......Any one wanna back me up on this?

I think this thread is pointless. RIMFIRE IS NOT SUITED FOR YOTES! That is the point.

hmm well i do agree to some point, i would not use a .17hmr on a yote BUT, it is a fast moving bullet (key word- BULLET) and it WILL kill. athough there are much better options, a good shot with this round will sit down a coyote

^ Yes but just because the round will kill does not mean it is a good choice for yotes. Hey a .22 LR will kill deer but is it a good choice? I'm not bashing anyboday but it is not etical to hunt them with the round. Step up to centerfire. Thiers a world of good options out thier and all are plenty powerful.

bought new .17 HMR called yotes for 45min got a hog, shot hog between the eyes at 50yds, made hog mad!!! killed hog with 357mag on my hip. Moral in that if you are going to call yotes and try to shoot them with the .17, you need a backup for the meaner stuff that might come in. I got rid of my 17 the next week.

My 17 HMR has killed three coyotes. Do I think it can do this at 300 Yards, No. All my coyotes were killed at 70 yards and less. The problem with the HMR is either you love it or hate it. I am glad I added it to my collection, and it gives my kids the chance to kill coyotes with-out using larger calibers that they can't handle right now. Like every-thing else, work with-in it's limits and it will do the job.

i used a 20 gr fmj
I wouldn't recommend it unless your 17 HMR shoots a lot better than mine at 100 yards. The 17's will group good at 50-60 yards but past that the groups really open up. I know this is going to make a lot of people mad but please just try it. Shoot your 17 HMR at 50 yards then at 100. You will see.

I would say it is either your gun or your scope(if ya have one on it). I have one with a scope and I can pop clay pigeons at 300 yrds. Not every time but 3 out of 5 times. At 200 yrds its deadly. Thats with standard cross hairs. If I were to get a mil dot I bet it would be better. I love it and would not hesitate to shoot a yote.

I have killed stray dogs with my .22lr so im sure that at close range (50 yards or so, thats about what I shot the stray MEAN!! dogs with) im sure it would drop a Yote (I always aim for the head with my .22lr) at that range but even then thats a small bullet. I dont think I would try it with a .17, I would feel like I would be almost better off with a .177 bb gun No affence to any of you guys. Thats just how I would feel about it.

No 17hmr for coyotes if your pelt shooting the 22/250 with a 45 grain boat tail soft point can not be beat . Dead the first shot and his buddy running away shot dead on the second shot.
