I have never used the 17hmr so I can't say yes or no. I shoot a .223 with a 55 grain bullet and have no tracking problems at all.

i have tested several rounds in the past and found that the cci plastic tipped tnt, and the winchester vmax get alot better pen. than the horn. i have downed 6 deer and 25 coyotes with it. with deer i don't take the chance of a body shot, at a hundred yards you cant beat them, i have killed several coyotes at 200-250 with heart shots the winchester v max penetrates and explodes vs. the horn. they explode on contact. but a head shot is the best in all cases. i am a skilled marksman, trained by my father a swat sharp shooter and wouldn't recomend these distance shots for most unless you fully understand windage and the ballistics of the round i use a redfield 10-40x50 illuminated scope with a savage model 93 bull barrel and syn. stock with a bi-pod of course, fo the average shooter 243 or bigger is best fit for coyotes and deer. JUST FOR TODAY |

not legal in ohio but when you own your own land here you can do what ever the hell you want. i do it for the challange, but more often than not i use a hell of a lot bigger gun. i use a mosin nagant 7.62x54 for coyotes and a rem 870 with a rifled barrel for deer

Game laws apply no matter what land you are on. I own my own land but the Game Warden still has his say.

Whether you own the land or not, mans law still applies, this being said, if my family was starving and it wasnt deer season I see nothin' wrong with harvesting something for the freezer, but thats an exception to the rule. Shotgun or bow for deer here in IL so I wouldnt know anything about getting to down a buck with a rifle! LOL maybe in the future... of course I do own my own property!!!! LOL and even then, I would leave the skilled shots needed with a .17 to a skilled marksman like bwfarrier!?!?

First timer on this forum. Moved to Idaho from Alaska 13 years ago. What a different world down here!! I got into varmint hunting 3 years ago. Needed to kill something. I have taken 2 coyotes with my savage 17hmr at 75 yards or less, wasn't a problem. Head shot, Hornady XTP 20 grain. I also hunt with a Remington SPS H barrel .204 with a Nikon Monarch 5.5 x 16 x 44 AO, attached bipod. Hornady 40 grain. The .204 is a great round with pin point shots, yes more expensive then the .223. But it makes a hell of a mess with coyotes.

^^ Now that i can believe lol. Idk about a heart shot at 200-250 yds with a 17 hmr. sounds damn near impossible if you ask me. although i did see a video on youtube of a guy shooting blackbirds at what he claimed was 225 yds with his 17 hmr...i think that was the distance anyway. idk but i can't imgaine it being effective on any type of game long range because it loses a lot of energy real quick and would blow all over the place. who knows i don't own one. yet.

I will be hunting this week, I will try and test my 17hmr at the 200 to 250 distance on a coyote. With the backup of my freind using my .204.

| GOOD LUCK! lol. you will need it i think. be sure that friend is ready to put in a kill shot IF you can hit a yote that far. not doubting your shooting skills, just the capability of a 17 hmr at that range.

My bet is you will never find where that .17HMR hits at 200yds and beyond. sam.

I agree. Got nothing to do today, think I will go to the range with a coyote target guled to a piece of 3/4" plywood. Check things out, I wonder if will even penetrate? Probably a crazy question and waste of time, have any of you heard of people loading 17hmr rounds? I'm getting set up for my .204, .270, 30-06, 40 S&W.

you guys are underestimating the 17hmr. no you most likely wont be able to down a yote cleanly at 200-250yds but a yote inside the 100yd range is in for some trouble

If you use a .17 past 75 yards on coyote chances are it will make the animal suffer a bad death. Stick with the larger caliber on coyotes period. No matter the distance arent we just kicking a dead horse on shooting coyotes with a target rifle... sure you could do it, but you could also do a tune up on your car with wooden tools... use the right equipment for the job especially when it comes to taking a living animals life.
