Coyote hunting

Anyone else going hunting this weekend? No moon. Really cold lately. The yotes should be moving and have their best winter coats on! I scored 40 sections south of Odessa that we're gonna try. I had to buy a new GPS cause the rancher says if you go in at dark you probably wont get out till daylight without it.

BTW, I'm thinking about throwing my hat in the ring on this Anna Nicole paternity suit. What have I got to lose?

I am going to make it out once or twice this weekend. Its been around zero, or below that for a while, and this weekend they are talking 20's and 30's. Hopefully, the dogs will be running wild.

I go every once in awhile. It's been snowing alot, so their out. Saw a pair of em at about 450, me and my dad fired and missed. (He was using a 7mm Rem Mag, and I was using a .30-06.) I think we hit one, but it was in CRP, so no one will ever know if we really did hit em. Might as well say we missed one!

Well, we had mixed luck. This place was so big and thick it took us most of the day to get the lay of the land. Thank God for GPS! I took my son and best friend who have never called before. I let them do the shooting while I called and coached. I called in 2 coyotes to about 75 yards but couldnt get a shot before they busted us. We did call in 4 red fox's, but the brush was so thick they couldnt get a good shot. I forgot my 870, so I couldnt use my Dead Coyote loads. I shot at 1 fox at 50 yards standing on the roof of a Jeep with my 1100 and 4 shot but couldnt knock him down. I wont forget the 870 next time. This place was crawling with red fox. They were stoked that we called in something almost every stand we made and look forward to going next month.

I got an Ithaca MAG-10 for the heavy brush. 10 guage buckshot is excellent for heavy brush, but it's a little big.

Frozentorso:So you are hunting south of Odessa?I worked out of Odessa years ago in the oil patch in when they were pouring water down the dry holes and pumping oil off the top.We varmint hunted a lot, mostly jacks and cottontails and what ever those little rats were that are hard to hit with a revolver. We shot coyotes but made no special effort to hunt them.I once got one with a hi standard double nine .22 at 70some paces. It wasnt all luck but some luck always helps.Good luck on future hunts. samuel.

Back then it was called the Latch ranch. About 5 miles north of McCamey. Thats the most God forsaken country I've ever hunted. If you vere make it to McCamey, dont eat there. Just keep driving. I think it must have the largest teen run-away rate in the U.S.

I use Dead Coyote nickel/tungsten shot with my 870. It'll kill at 100 yards. It'll also make a mess out of a fox, not to mention your shoulder.
