new rig

I will be building a new varmint rig in a month or two. A weatherby vanguard sub-moa varmint in .22-250, with a nikon 5-20x44 monarch scope in warne mounts and rings with a harris bi-pod. I will mostly be hunting smaller varmints at long range but will also hunt coyotes too. any thoughts on this setup?

The scope sounds great for target and daylight/good condition varmint hunting but a little too much for preditor hunting.I would keep the lower # at 2.5ir 3 so I had the most light gathering capability,s I could get and still have decent magnification. Most preditors are seen early in the morning or late in the evening. Also bad weather is good preditor hunting time. sam.

well I would be doing mostly small varmint hunting anyway, I would go out for coyotes only once and a while. quick question, can you think of anything to hunt with an M1 carbine? coyotes at close range maybe?

If you can get frangible bullets (softpoints, hollowpoints) to work in it and be someplace where there arent a lot of people or buildings around,I would think you could have a lot of fun with an M1 car.Hardball is just too bouncy prone and an M1 car just doesnt have the steem to smash them up.I would think they could be reloaded with that accelerator bullet and be good for varmints. sam.

I have done some research and am now thinking about getting it in .204 or .223..less expensive, and longer barrel life. and either round could be used on the occasional coyote. as for the carbine I will give the soft points a try. I know I will have to get close, but thats not a problem, I have gon varmint hunting with my gammo shadow .177 before. its good out to about 50 yards or so thats why Im building a new gun

If you are mostly varmint hunting I advise the .204 ruger for more power down range. If you plan on a lot of target shooting the .223 is the cheapest on ammo and has a longer barrel life. From 0to 300yds there wont be that much difference. sam.

My vote is for the .204. My buddies and I do a lot of gopher hunting here in Montana with that caliber and it works GREAT. We're typically shooting 200-400 yards with it. My .204 likes a Federal 39 grain PP. +.7" @100 yds., -4.3" @300 yds, -13.2"@400 yds.

well I guess I will go with the .204, plus its lack of recoil will allow me to see were the shots are hitting. and according to the ballistics on Hornady's website, the 40gr v-max .204 has more energy at 200-500 yards than the .223 or the .22-250 with a 40gr v-max.
