| My advice is get to know your varmint.Read up on them. They have several web pages that tell a lot about their habbits. And then get out and meet him personally. For walking around guns I prefer a .22lr semi, auto that is accurate with those hyper bullets.I know this is going to catch flak from some but a .22lr has more energy at 80yds and is much more accurate than buckshot.Whats more I am talking from experience, not guessing. For a walking around gun that I might get a long shot or use doing some calling,I prefer any of the centerfire .22,s with varmint bullets. My favorite is the Hornady 40gr VMAX.I do not consider the rimfires adequate for long shots or working from a blind.A shotgun and heavy shot (#2 bird to 00 buck)is great for walking but hits will be difficult over 50yds.For calling at night, open fiber optic sights,or a lighted low power scope is okay but you will have the best luck with #4 buck or such.I use a ,22 Hornet at night but I have a lot of experience. You also need a light, preferably one that changes color, mounts on the firearm, and has a remote. They make a lot of videos on calling and I would get 1 or more.(I learned the hard way years ago.)As to what I am going to hear about a rimfire wounding and not killing,my feelings are that after seeing dead calves, sheep, pigs, and some little old lady,s pet dog or cat,I dont intentionally wound a coyote but I dont have much mercy for them when I see what they do to other animals, such as feeding on them while they are still alive. It is great fun to hunt them and doesnt take long to learn if you really want to. sam. |
