iv been praire dog hunting once in new mexico. iv ben wanting to go again but wasnt really wanting to drive the 15 hours so we have been thinking of going to south dakota or some where closer. but i was woundering if you have to pay anything to hunt them. in new mexico i was with my uncle that lives there so it was free but i dnt know if its diffrent in the dakotas or nebraska

There are lots of Pdogs in Neb and SD. Not that long ago it was pretty easy to get on private ground and plink away at them. Now it seams more and more that you have to pay an outfitter or the land owner to get on ground and shoot. I know that an out of stater has to get a SD varment permit. Don't know if you have to get an out of state hunting license also. In NE you don't need a permit to my knowledge I know that in staters don't.

I go in the Valentine NE area. I haven't done it but I guess that the SD Rose Bud indian reservation does offer hunts through area outfitters. It will cost you money, I don't know how much, but they have a ton of ground with a ton of Pdogs.

Well hope that this info helped you out. I love shooting Pdogs and it has taken a lot of time and effort to network my way onto some decent ground to shoot.

I agree, Nebraska may save you some time, pending what part of SE IA you live. Call the Valentine Chamber of Commerce, you'll be suprised the ph#'s they may have on hand.
Also another tip that works for me when going into a new area where I know dog's are present.

First thing I do, is to hit the local coffee shop( look for the most pickups, and prferably aroung morning coffee/ lunch time), sit down and order. It ain't long b4 the waitress start asking the who's and what's. 9 times outa 10 you her , " hey Frank, John, Bill, we got shooter(s) look'n for dogs. The 10th time, it's ph#'s. When everybody's done,(don't get impatient) I'm usually riding or following one or more of the ranchers.
I never bring up $, the ones that charge will be straight up. The ones that don't will say as much at some time, but,,,,,I always offer to throw some cash their way, out of courtesy and respect. Some will accept, some will refuse. But the way I see it, even though they control thousands of acres and have big dollars in livestock, most live a pretty modest life, and Cash is precious.

I always carry enough cash for atleast 50 bucks a day per shooter. Believe me, they appricate it. And if you respect the land, drive on the paths and don't leave GARBAGE!!!!!The grass they rely on so much is sparse, driving on it don't help it grow, specially if it's dry!!!close gates behind you!!! and plain just be courteous,,,,you be welcome back anytime and have a friend for life.
