You might check your state laws, some states albino species are protected.

I believe those laws about not shooting albino animals started from american indian traditions and have been pased down and respected by hunters in modern day. I personaly would not shoot him. But we all have deferent thoughts on that but if you do shoot him be sure to check you laws first.

I agree as well. There aren't many albino in any specie left. Don't contribute to making the numbers even fewer.

used to be an albino cow moose that lived around us. saw her every couple of years with a new calf. the calf was always normal colored. havent seen her a a couple years but she was getting old. there is no law here about shooting them but no one did. as a genetic abnormality I am not sure if it is good to let them breed or not. certaily makes them visiable thought

I think that a lot of ancient cultures saw them to be omens or signs because of how rare they are. From my understanding its something genetically passed down that is extremely rare and recessive. Most humans which are born albino have "normal" siblings from the same parents. Even though those siblings may carry the gene for it, it is very recessive.

Anyone science majors can jump in and fully explain it? I know it has to do with the body not producing the right pigment for the skin at the genetic level. However, we do know that albino mice breed more albino mice. If you have ever had a pet that fed off of mice, you always got albino feeder mice at the pet store.

Albino animals naturally die out faster than normal colored animals, because they stick out like a sore thumb. I also heard that they aren't as attractive as normal colored animals of that breed, and thus are less likely to find a mate.

I personally wouldn't shoot it unless it was a threat to me, my family, or my property.

These pictures were taken in Maine last year:

Field Notes

Kind of rare to see 1 albino moose, but twins...

Good for you. I hope for his sake he does leave your livestock alone. Too bad he's only looking for food to survive. Maybe sit down and have a stern talking to it. lmao Again, glad you said that...

Hmm i suppose thats pry not a bad idea. I knwo my cousins had an albino squirrel we always used to watch deer hunting and we always let it live too. I think it died now but i know i watched it at least 3 years in a row, they are exciting to see just because they are all so rare.

Albino coyote? Hmm, back when I was in college I would see a lot of strange things after the parties. I remember seeing a white elephant once. Kept me up all night arguing with the purple hippopotamus that was hogging the covers in my bed. Learned to ask what was in that glass they were passin' around. Especially if one of them had a buddy that worked the docks. Still have nightmares over that one.

You shouldn't argue with the purple hippopotamus...it's usually right.

my dad and I have seen a white coyote a couple of times. I don't know if it's entirely white or not but i'm pretty sure it is. when I told some friends they asked if maybe it just had snow on it . either way i'd love to shoot one just to prove that there are pure white coyotes running around.
