Which grain is best? Being new at coyote hunting and not yet taking one, what grain of bullet would you reccommend for hunting. I have been practicing with 55gr. bullet. I shoot a 223

40gr Hornady VMAX with 26.5gr AA2230.Its good to 400yds and wont tear the pelt up unless something wierd happens.Hornady loads these to 3800fps,but I handload and get about 3650fps of pure accuracy and sudden death for mr coyote. sam.

I use 55gr vmaxes in my 22-250, great bullets and accurate as hell with 35gr of H4895. Havent chronied the load but on paper it should work out to about 3600fps- not much slower than factory stuff. Every hit i make on foxes rips a nasty hole out the other side, or takes part of the head off. Though last weekend I hot a fox about 250m away and the vmax didnt expand, it went straight through and the fox fell over after a minute or so when my mate was lining it up for another shot. Clean through almost like a FMJ... wonder if there wasnt enough energy to initiate expansion or if the bullet was a bit more solid in construction that the others in the box.

I agree that I might get a little more with heavier bullets but I can pick golfballs off with ease at 300yds and the 40gr in a holdoff shot is good at 400yds.But the biggest thing is pelt damage, which is virtually non existent with the little ones.Definitly,if I were just shooting varmints to kill them,I would go heavier. sam.
