Exclamation .22 WMR VS .17 HMR for coyotes?

Now before everyone gets into a fight about how these two cartridges are under powered for coyotes, let me just say that the only reason I am posting this is because Since I live in nc. I dont have 300 yard open fields to shoot coyotes on. Most of my shot are limited from 50-75 yards max.
So, that aside which rifle caliber would be best for shots on coyotes from 50-75 yards or less. What would be the best ammo for those shots? I would also like to hear any stories you guys have about hunting coyotes with eitheir gun,Thanks,nc.hunter

i'm sorry but even at less than 100 yds. neither is a good round for yotes.
now if you get lucky and have a 1 shot kill thats one thing but with those rounds its going to be difficult to do.
remember that the goal of any hunter is to make a clean kill with as least pain and agony as possible.
and those two rounds just dont cut the mustard.

anything between 50 and 100yds can be headshot with the 17HMR no problems. 22 mag would be probably better as it hold more energy.

22 Hornet would be a smarter choice if you wanted to keep your calibre small.

Another perfect one!

Don't use anything rimfire on yotes!

nc.hunter, we're not trying to get on your case cause your young but thats why we're getting on it,you are young and you have to learn these things. i know you
want to use a .22 to hunt coyotes with but over time they have been shown not
to have enough power at greater distances. even 100 yds. is way to far to ask a
.22 to have enough killing power.

so please do all hunters a favor and give up the idea of useing a .22 to hunt "yotes"
with. we have to be aware at all times that we, as hunters and gun owners are
under intense scrutiny. so any time that the anti-gun nuts can point to some
"hunters" and say that their not killing the animals humanely, it just gives us all a black eye. sorry for my rambling but this is something that i am very passionite about.

17 HMR is my pick

I know you are hit with this topic as far as using a rimfire on yotes, but I also believe there are many other calibers that you could use that might be of better use. you can kill them with 17 HMR and it is very misunderstood the damage that it can do.
I own multiple calibers ranging from 17 HMR to 45-70, Im not saying the 17 HMR would be the first gun to reach for, but if its the only thing I have in my hand when i see a yote, then Im going to shoot.

What to keep in mined with this caliber.
range?
I'm I sighted properly for this distance?
Glass(is it a crappy 4x 15mm scope)
MOST IMPORTANT : DO I FEEL CONFIEDENT IN MAKING THIS SHOT?
and SHOT PLACEMENT! HEAD=DEAD

All in all, spend a lil hard earned money on a good .243/.223 with a good scope tell us about those 200+ yrd shots.

Is a 22 Hornet enough, or should I use my 30-30. I have a Mini 14 but that sucker is loud and I'm trying to be fairly quiet. I live in a rural, but growing area and shots will be 50 yards or less from a tree stand.
I'm not doing this for "sport", but animal control.

i dont know much about this, but before they brought in the "new" gun law, my dad used to shoot deer at ~150 yards with a .22,
It should be fine as long as it's a headshot, wouldn't try for a body hit, probably wouldn't kill it.

If you are limited to 75 yards and are a good shot a 17HMR is plenty.

Energy and speed are a bit different so the lighter bullet will hit with less kinetic yet still do good damage because of bullet construction and speed.

That being said, I have taken many yotes with my Savage and I can tell you quite honestly that out to about 100 yards it will explode the skull and scramble anything inside.
I would never try a body shot though as it does lack in that area.

If your suspect of your ability then opt for a 223 imho.

The hornet would be a great round to use, as would a lot of others. For those 50 yard shots, I would drag out my marlin lever in 25-20 win. If I was reaching for the 100 yard shot or more, a 222 rem, in an old mohawk. Would I try it with a 17 or 22 mag, yes. I don't take a shot that I don't have confidence I can make. I practice, and know each of my guns well. If your area is becomeing more and more built up, you will have to worry more and more about where the bullets might end up. Any bullet can ricochet, and also pass through and keep going. A shot gun can be more challenging, your target will need to be a bit closer, but you don't have to worry as much.

With the choices being what they are I would go with a 17 HMR, I took a yote at an approx 200 yards shot him in the base of the ear. but i practice with the gun every week about 250 rnds. But my pick for keepin it quiet and cheap is the 22 hornet ruger makes a gun for it about 300 dollars go for that, b/c it is powerful enough for the 150 yard shot and since you won't be shooting over 75 it is a done deal

I'm with the folks that lean away from anything rimfire. If cost is a concern the Howa .223 caliber rifles are pretty affordable and will definitely get the job done.

The sound part of it is a little bit tougher call. Anything bigger than a .22 is going to be louder but....better than leaving a wounded animal out there. That'll really get the neighbors mad!

Why is that always the answer? "If you are a sucky shot, just get you a bigger caliber..."

If you doubt your ability to shoot a fox in the head at 100 yards, cancel the hunting trip and schedule some more range time.
