Petemi, he was talking about a 15-30 yard shot! If you can't cleanly kill a groundhog at that range with a .22LR I'm pretty sure a little time at the range is more in order than increasing the caliber.

I'm no fan of letting animals suffer either, can't stand the thought of it... but from that distance I don't think it should be an issue. You should be able to hit the eye of a fly at 50' with any decent .22 rifle.

As to the original post, stingers are perfect.

I'm kind of in the middle on this issue. I'm all for a clean, quick kill, but I feel that blowing them into a pink mist and flying specks of meat & fur is a little extreme also. That's just a little too "adolescent redneck" for me. Splattering soda cans full of water is cool for me, but not living creatures, no matter what kind of vermin they are. A "pop & drop" should suffice, guess I'm getting too old and soft.

Hahaha yeah, something I would have gladly done at age 17!

At age 46 a clean kill with a patient shot is more satisfying. I know the chance of suffering with the pink mist thing is nil, but somehow that just seems over the top to me too.

I shot a rabbit once with a 30-30, and the results kinda turned me off. I felt really bad about it, and I don't think I've killed anything since. I'm not against hunting, not at all, but it's just not my thing anymore. Something about seeing that rabbit's head cartwheeling through the air just made me ashamed of myself. But, I'd really like to do some prairie dog shooting, but not to blow 'em to pieces, just pop 'em and drop 'em. Guess I'm just a weirdo.

Sure looks like a baked, young groundhog.
Made me drool and took me back to my youth.

Sorry rondog, I don't think you would care for prairie dog shooting at all.
Long range dog shooting puts them in the "pink mist". Walk over to the dog town after a day of shooting and there are pieces/parts all over the place.
