A .22lr is big enough to kill pigs but I think I might want something better to hunt them with. While I believe a .223rem.with a well placed shot would usually do it,why not use something you pretty well know will do it? sam.

Cudgy I know some folks who use a .223. But I also know some here in Tx. that use only a dog and pocket knife. The latter I call crazy!

| I never hunted wild hogs in Tx., but have a few times in Ga. and S.C. In the place in Ga. they had some hunts that were filmed, one of which was a good-sized hog run by dogs and taken with a "pig Sticker". Interesting, but we decided to go ahead and just hunt with our rifles...lol. A couple of years before a 600lb+ hog was taken there. It was a great place, all fair chase and it was a real nice introduction for us newbies! |

We've always used .25-06 or .30-06 to hunt with with good results. One day when we were hunting in the national forest we ran across a couple of hog dogs that seemed lost. THey followed us out to one of the main roads and we called the number on their collars. We told the guy we had his dogs, so he came to meet us. While talking to him he told us they capture their hogs alive during the summer. Its too hot to field dress them, cause the meat will spoil before you get it to the cooler, so they have their dogs corner the hog then they tie the hog up and haul it out to their vehicles on mules, then dress the hogs. I politely told him I thought he was crazy.

The kids around here run'm with dogs then kill'm with a knife. I might try killing a pig with a knife but I can't keep up with the danged dogs anymore.

It really depends why you're hunting them. If you really need them off your land you can bait them (depending on whether or not its legal in your state), trap them, or hunt them with a gun or dogs and a gun. If you want to shoot the hogs without baiting them, it is usually easier to find them using dogs, unless you are lucky enough to know where they are feeding on a certain day. The hogs around here have such a huge range and move around so much that its hard to pattern them. We have had good luck trapping them. For bait a bucket of sour corn mash works wonders. I've never hunted over bait, I just use it in traps, but I know guys who have hunted over bait with much success.

I would like to hunt wild hogs someday. Our local university is the Arkansas Razorbacks, the mascot we had was huge. It would take a good shot to take him out with a 223. I have killed several deer with a 223 by using neck shot, I know it was under 50 yards. Good luck to the bacon getters. Mike

On my last trip to the panhandle I forgot my Mini-30 and only had my Bushy. Dropped this boar from 310 yards right throught the pump. That laser range finder sure came in handy!
