| Night Vision for varmit hunting
I'm looking at getting night vision for night hunting varmits. Should I go with a night vision rifle scope or night vision monocular and a spot light? Any recommendations on brands etc?

Here's a scope I'll recommend you, if you're still looking for one, that I can guarantee you does work very, very well and is priced really well also. If you're a member, only $359.97, if not, $399.97. This one is good out to about 150 yards. That's according to the paperwork it comes with and from what I've read online. But to be honest, I'd say anywhere between 100yds. and 150yds., with 150yds. being the edge. But it works great and even comes with 2 lithium 3V batteries and you can use it as soon as it gets dark the day you get it. Pitch black night turns to day. Watch the video also at the link, it works as good as that shows if not better... You can even use it hand held, not just rifle mounted... Atn Night Vision Rifle Scope, Nightvision, Atn, Atn Rifle Scope Night Vision Nv 3x 80mm Gun Mountable Lighted Reticle Ir Infrared Illuminator at Sportsman's Guide.

Go check out the one I linked for you then. Watch the video it has with it. You won't find anything even close to that price. It is a Gen. 1, but it works great.

Well, the only way I see a monocular being useful is a higher generation for longer range spotting. I would get a rifle scope first. The reason I asked on the range, is for what generation you can get by with. A Generation I as GM mentioned will get you to a 100yds. but even with a 450 watt illuminator, dark nights may not be the best. As with most gear, the more you spend the better you get. |

Well night vision and spot lights don't mix. Even the smallest amount of light is like looking into the sun. They also sale those small spot lights that you can mount to your scope that is for preadator hunting. Never tried them but I have heard they work. As far as having a monocular or scope it's kind of hard to say since you will be walking into your set up in pitch black if you have the scope. If you have the monocular you can see while walking but would not have an aiming device to shoot with. You could always buy a head lamp with a red lense so you can walk into your hide and then use your scope.

Tom one thing you need to look into before you make the purchase is if it's legal to hunt after dark. That would be a bad thing if you were hunting when it wasn't legal and were to get in trouble for it.

^^ ah great point, in ohio most game hours end either at dusk or half hour after dusk, although coyotes and ground hogs have no time restrictions unless it is deer gun season
