| Odd coyote question and observation
Got to thinking about this last night as a large pack of coyotes came thru the woods behind the farm. They were real vocal, yipping, yapping and squealing all over the place. Now, the question. Why do they make so much noise while they are out and about hunting ? I would think that would ruin their chances of catching anything. It also brings out some predators here that would like a nice young coyote for a midnight snack. Also, when I was a young kid on the farm in central nebraska, you hear coyotes howl at night. You all know the howl. I haven't heard a lone coyote howl for years and years. Why ? Randy |

i heard the same thing one night a few years ago.... really freaked me out as they were quite close to the building i was in.... it was a family unit, and the ones making all the noise were the young coyotes..... they were probably hungry and the mother wouldn't let them nurse.... she was probably teaching them to hunt solid food.....

I'm sure they come thru quite often when we don't hear them either. Randy | |

SOme packs tend to be more family oriented than others and the yiping and yapping is their small talk. Young ones yipping at mom are common too. My folks live well inside the city limits of Colorado Springs, behind their house is an area that cannot be developed over the years there has been an increase in the coyote population there as the rabbit population has skyrocketed. My mom used to get nervous about it till their cocker spaniel died now she just sits and enjoys the show. Me? I'd be out there with a bow watching and waiting.

I've always enjoyed listening to coyotes at night. I used to hear them once every couple months at my mom's house. I live more in-town now and have A/C so keep the windows closed and don't hear them much anymore.

I used to fish at night and take family members out fishing when they came visiting and it never failed the coyotes whoud start yapping and they would get parinoid, most of the time it is not more than two or three but on a still night they sound like they are right on top of you they way sound travels,I always carried my Ruger 22 auto and a couple extra mags. And kind of snikker when they would move alittle closer to me.One morning early fishing a single coyote came down the bank on the other side and I sat real still and waited till it streached its neck out to get a drink ,and hollered WHAT ARE YOU DOING,the coyote took a dump and almost fell back into the creek getting away and I laughed so hard that I almost fell in the creek myself.Sometimes it is just hard to tell how many there are unless you get a visual on them. |

I have always been told that thats how they talk back and forth and its when they suddenly stop that they are beginning to hunt. I have noticed when hunting that they start yipping and yapping and as soon as you do a good squealing rabbit call it just suddenly stops and then sure enuph they start sneeking up and if ya got a good redlight you will catch em trying to sneak up and find that "dying" Rabbit

| I was raised in West Texas where we heard them
singing just about every night. I was always told the pack would spread out as it moved through the mesquites. As noted, communication was vital to make certain the pack was in tact and moving in the same direction at the same rate of speed. However, they can really shut it off. Exactly how they know to shut if off and go into pack hunting mode is a total mystery to me. I suppose some type vocalization transmitted what was known to do to the rest of the pack. I really cannot state ever hearing a single coyote in the West Texas desert. That really may happen in other areas. Last edited by nathangdad; 10-07-2009 at 08:12 AM. |

I watched 3 in the lower pasture last few nights with the new night scope. They haven't bothered anything yet, so I didn't take a shot. I have a few sheep, so I'm watching every night. If they stick with rabbits, I'll probably leave them alone.

They come through yipping and yapping on my property all the time. I can young and old so I have always thought it was training or communicating with the younguns. However I have a friend who says they go through as a noisy pack to get hunkered down night animals up and running where they can all gang up on it. and 338 rum gets the award for how to silence them LMAO!
