Shots Fired!

Tonight at approx 2300 hours I was chatting on the MSN Messenger with our friend Shaun. All of a sudden I heard shots fired outside my bedroom window! Crack! You know the sound when you hear it. Melissa asked me what the sound was. I told her that was an unmistakable gun shot.

I grabbed my Glock, flashlight and vest....and threw on a Police t-shirt and went outside. Melissa impressed me by immediately tossing me my cell phone and locking the door and turning out the lights.

I went towards where I heard the shots which was right around the corner from my front doo and right outside my bedroom window.

A young man runs to me and says, "Officer, Officer, did you hear that?" I told him that I had and aksed him what he heard or saw. He told me that he was on the back porch of his apartment having a cig when he heard a car "hauling a s s thru the parking lot." He said that he looked up to see what was going on and saw an african american male running behind the car. He said that the male raised a black pistol that looked like mine ans fired a shot at the car towards the west. He said that the dude ran right at his apartment and up the side walk, so he ducked into his apartment so as not to be seen.

He described the car as being dark in color and looked like a sports car. He said that he had never seen the male subject before in his life.

Cut to the chase....I got a hold of dispatch and they sent me an officer whom I had never sen before in my life. A young buck. He took my info and I took him to the now couple of witnesses who had gathered around. He asked them what happened and left within about fifteen seconds! Man we just had a god**** gunshot up in here! (remember Shaun is online with me the whole time waiting for an update).

The officer said he would drive aorund and check things out...then I watched him drive right to the street and leave.

I could not find a shell casing in the dark, provided the gun was a semi in the first place. I'll look again in the morning and see what I can come up with....maybe nothing.

But I'll go ahead and write it up just in case somebody went to the hospital with a gun shot wound tonight...course, that happens everyday in San Antonio a thousand times over. I was just a little disappointed in the way the officer didn't even shine a flashlight around.

Yeah Joe...the good stuff always happens when one is off duty I suppose. I figured out why the city of san Antonio dislikes us as police officers. That dude was 110% lazy on that call. If somebody had been hit, and we don't even know that yet, there could be serious reprcussions. You would think that since it was a fellow copper reporting it along with eye wittnesses, he would have taken it a little more seriously.

Did you find anything, Matt? Hope all is okay...

Joe, I'm surprised you don't hear more gunshots than anyone here!

Did you find anything? Anybody show up with a gun shot wound? Was the officer that showed up to take the report still a relatively inexperienced officer? Sounds like what he did did nothing to bring credit to the Police in the eyes of the public. Or am I reading to much into this? Please fill us in.

I totaly forgot to get back to y'all on this.

I didn't find a shell casing anywhere, but there are a bunch of huge juniper bushes out there that might have hidden one.

A couple of girls in the complex came to my door the following day after the shooting and told me that they had been having a slumber party and were out on their back patio when they heard the gunshots. They gave me the exact same description as the guy the night before, and described the car the same way. They had with them an "Old Navy" clothing bag wich they said the shooter threw into the bushes underneath their balcony. Inside the bag was marijuana (a very small amount). It looked as though the bag had contained a larger amount of marijuana, which I assume the shooter removed before dropping the bag. The bag also contained a couple catalogs for San Antonio College, a local junior college. I took custody of the bag and called my direct Sgt and told him everything that happened. He told me to call back and request the shift supervisor to come to my location. I did as he said and got nothing more than a patrolman at my house.

He looked in the bag and then handed it back to me. He told me, "I've been called in to go home. It's time for shift change." He told me to take the bag and throw it in the dumpster!

Skip to this past Thursday. I received a phine call form a Sgt out of the same substation that these officers were assigned. He said that neither of them had written a report on the incident. He said that I should have never been instructed to throw the bag away as it was evidence in a shooting (there is still no victim, so I'm assuming that nobody was hit). I apologized profusely and told me that disciplinary action would be taken against the officers involved..................End of Report.

sounds to me like the Sgt said...

It sounds to me like that Sgt told you, very politely, ......and the horse you rode in on!

If that is the way they handle a shooting down thataway, makes me glad the local LEO here think they are out to save the world.

I only hope this was an isolated incident of negligence.

Thanks for the follow up. I guess the question is, was this a big enough screw up to warrent you making a fuss with your Sargeant and or to have a chat with IA. I'm assuming being told to get rid of evidence is a no no in your department.

Do you think it was inexperience, incompetence or indifference?

Bottom line, do you think it's worth persuing?
