11 November

The 11th marks the 53rd year America will gather to celebrate Veterans Day, to "pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this nation," as stated in the 1954 Presidential Proclamation issued by President Eisenhower.

Tomorrow, Americans pause to consider the sacrifices made by veterans on behalf of our nation. Whether attending a parade, a memorial service or observing the day in private, Americans are reflecting upon and marking this occasion. If it were possible to call every name and express our gratitude, we certainly would. On this day, we salute and say thank you to all veterans of our nation's armed forces, and especially the men and women who proudly served and are serving in the United States Air Force & all other branches.

At a non-veteran-related ceremony, I had the opportunity to remember a dear friend serving in Iraq.

Back on veterns day this year several news reports said that there are only about 12 confirmed WWI vets still alive in the US, one of whom is a woman. My grandfather was drafted during WWI he reported to a camp in the south for basic a couple of days before 11/11/18. A couple of days later they sent all the new recruits home with a train ticket and food money. My granddad was in the Army for about a week. They weren't even issued uniforms. He always laughed about it when he told the story.
