Proud Father ... what is your son going to do in the Air Force? ... and now, for a little service related humor: Last edited by LarryO1970; 01-30-2008 at 11:17 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

He is in Mississippi at Kessler learning something to do with computers. He wanted police but he had trouble with seeing some colors, and they would not let him have that position.

His best friend leaves on the 12 of Feb. and he will be doing the police thing. All police work is hard and I tried talking both of them out of it. But you know how young men are, always looking for the glory. I am glad for my son because now he is talking about taking classes and furthering his education in the computer field. He gets stressed sometime's but he seems to be doing better. I think it's the whole missing home and his girlfriend thing that stress him more than anything. He is headstrong, so I think he will do OK.

Proud Father... when I fist joined, my going away dinner was with in the company of my grandfather, uncle, etc.... both of whom were Navy (WWII firefighter) and AF (Buff crewmember) Vets respectfully. I told them I wanted every medal on the planet... to have that glory. etc. I recall my late grandfather now (God rest his soul) asking me if I wanted a Purple Heart... which, of course as a young, dumb kid I said "yes". He than spoke to me about actually taking a bullet for his country and how it really turned out to be a marksmanship award for the enemy. After such conversation, I really didn't want that anymore. Later in my AF career... we were attacked (Khobar Towers, 25 June 1996) and lost 19 AF members... those people were awarded posthumous Purple Hearts and then, it all made sense to me. That is not an award I'd want. For those who received one, man, I sympathize. I got lucky... not a scratch so far... Learning what I did from my grandfather... I pass that along to others I meet who wanted the same I did. Good luck to your son... anything else I can help with, please ask. |

Thanks for the encouragement. I think we all set out for the same thing in the beginning and take certain jobs for the wrong reasons. Being a retired police officer I know how thankless some jobs can be. But there is always something that makes it all worth it. It always made me feel good knowing that I helped someone. I didn't need a medal or recognition. I know that this is the best thing for my son and that when he gets older he will look back on this as being one of the proudest moments in his life no matter what job he does. I think he just wanted to follow in my fathers and my footsteps. My Father was a WWII and Korea Vet ( MP in the Army). I am just proud that he decided to join the AF to serve his country and not just hang out with people that wanted to get in trouble. When I was at Lackland for his graduation I noticed that it was one of the finest facilities I have ever been at. I know that our men and woman serving our Country do not get enough recognition. So Thanks again.

| Yup, good ol' FF on the C & D model F-15s...and the 27th Fighter Squadron jets had the yellow stripes on the rear vertical stabs...the other 2 squadrons from Langley were the 71st and the 94th with red and blue stripes on the tail fins.

Not a veteran here and I hope I am not intruding. I just to offer my deepest respect for veterans out there. I understand that you dont get what I feel is enough appreciation for what you do/have done for this country . Here in Anchorage Alaska there is a large contingent of U.S military personel and seemingly a genuine appreciation for them from us civilians. I offer discounts at my business to active and retired personel and at times give personal thanks to military personel I see at events, in public, and so on. Many seem surprised by it and appreciate it. I hope more people will let you all know we could not have the greatest country one earth without your efforts and sacrifices. If one day I can do more, I will. Thank you ! Lawrence |
