My favorite c-rat was beans and weenies! Everyone else hated them, I could get two for one if I had something somebody wanted bad enough! Beans, beans, the musical froot, the more you eat, the more you toot! The more you toot, the better you feel. So lets have beans for every meal!!!!

My favorite was the ham and eggs followed by the beef patties (ya I know) followed by some kind of beef stew. I hated spagehtti the most, especially when it was cold out.

I've had the new MRE's to, I don't know what these young guys are complaining about. They're better than c-rats.

IF4 LUNCHES

IN THE EARLY 50'S WE HAD IF4 LUNCHES (IN FLIGHT LUNCHES) A FORM OF AIRFORCE C-RATS. ONCE IN A WHILE WE HAD ARMY C-RATS AND WE THOUGHT WE WERE HAVING A GOURMET MEAL.

Too young for C-rats, except once in the CAP during highschool. Nasty!

MRE's aren't bad. The ham slices make a fair sandwich. I did get tired of the "Jamaica Sauce" though. The diced potatoes tasted even more plastic than KFC's mashed taters!

Those danged "detainee's" at Camp X-ray - let's feed 'em nothing but "Ham&MF's" - but I guess that would be cruel and unusua treatment.

For C-Rats I would have to say the beans and franks, liked all of the MREs chicken and rice was a fav. Also really liked that chocolate nut cake, it was pretty addictive.

My C-Rats had the little packs of cigarettes in them, 3 to a pack. Didn't smoke, so I saved them when we were in the field. Man when some guys would run out of smokes and they found out I had a crap load in my footlocker I was rich! Came home from the woods with more money than I left with! Such a capitalist I is!

another vote for ham and eggs in the can - good stuff, reminds me of spam today.

In the MRE the best was the freeze dried strawberries - tasted like cotton candy, eat it without the water.

Whirlwind, I once saw a WWII GI condom for sale on eBay - fortunately, it was unused still in the wrapper. Like I said - wierd stuff there!

The only C-rat item I liked were the canned peaches. The C-rat fruitcake was Gawd-awful - we shoulda shot them at the North Koreans! Woulda ended the war more quickly.

Too young for C-rats. came in in '84 the MRE's have improved. I'm thankfull to have them. Better than going hungry. We'd heat them on an engine block or a light in the TAD V. When the chemical MRE heaters came out, we'd make bombs out of them. Talk about fun. Got us in a bit of trouble once. OOPS. I paln on keeping a case out at the camper, Just in case.

My grandad was in the islands in wwII (air force rigger 75 sqdn) and he reckons that the ham&eggs in a can that you blokes had where the ultimate, beat the heck out of bully beef and dog biscuts that they got in their rat packs.
I love talking to him about those times, he could write a book about it, but like all old fellas he doesn't see what the big deal is.

Well Gents, never had the C-rats, had plenty of MRE's and i sont see why everyone complains about em. I like the things. I'm wishing i could have some of them right no instead of the chow they feed us on this boat. At least with the MRE's if you get a new one you havent had before, you can check the box so you know what you're eating. Out here, the cooks themselves have told us several times they dont know what the meat we get is. But i know one thing we get fed thats a little different. These big ribs, almost no meat on em, but the bones are big. Now, i know they arent pork, and they arent beef, and I've had horse once, and it's not horse either. So we've all just taken to joking around that they're camel ribs. Who knows, we may be right, but they wont tell us, then again, they probably dont know either...

Oneshot - in the Navy I ate "mystery meat" at many a meal. I would have gladly taken MRE's at times. Our Philipino mess-cranks would curry everything - I can't stand curry to this day.
Those little buggers ruined a lot of good meat.
For breakfast they'd claim the Creme-of-wheat was grits! That's a bad trick to pull on a Southern boy! Yuck!
I did like the home-made bread when they ran out of the store-bought stuff - usually after about two weeks at sea.
