P38 Ammo
Once again thinking about getting one of those post war (60's) West German surplus P38s.
I've heard that they will not eat hollowpoints at all and don't like cheap (ie Blazer) ammo. Any truth to this? Anyone have a P38 that could shed some light on any ammo issues?

They were designed for Ball ammo so thats what I shoot in mine...I hate Blazer ammo.Give Me Brass thats Reloadable or else !
By the way...Hollow points in a 9mm are about as useless as they are in .40 cal. They Dont expand even after hitting 2x4's !

By the way, do you like your surplus P38? Does it compare to commercial 9mm pistols?

The P38 is a well made Pistol and I personally like Military guns due to their strength and reliability. That is why I have Colt .45 autos, Makarovs, and the P38. Browning Hi-powers are good, too. I stay away from Glocks( I just don't like Plastic Guns !) and Llama's, and Star's,etc just because I have had to repair too many of them over the years and I see what happens and what wears out or breaks after less than Hard Use !

I have a post war p38. December 1959 to be exact. I LOVE IT!!!!!!
It looks cool, it is the most reliable pistol I've ever shot. Although it is not very accurate since the barrel it practically shot out. I have never shot HP's through it (too expensive), and I don't carry it so I don't see the need to practice with them. Luckily I bought mine about a year and a half ago when I got it for $275 in pristine condition. BUY ONE!!!! You won't regret it!! |

Did the pistol come with a "shot out" barrel? I'm not understanding. If you got it in pristine condition, what happened to the barrel? Did it corrode? I'm thinking it would take tens of thousands of rounds to actually wear the barrel out.
I'm not trying to be a smart-ss. I'm just curious because I want to know about any issues with these pistols.
