30-30 vs. 30-06 who's king?

Which one has taken more Deer, the 30/06 Springfield or the 30-30 Winchester??

Here in Michigan it seems to be very close although I think the edge goes to the old 30-30 Win.

Yeah, you didn't open a can of worms. None-the-less 30-06 edges out 30-30 by a frog hair in Az...

I think that the 30-30 would be in the lead, but I also think that it is losing ground because so many people want a gun that they can reach out to 500 yds and hit a tic-tac.

Don't really know here in NC. I know that we had a 30-30, and it was nice. But I am about to be the proud new owner of a 30-06, if the store still has it, that will be adding to the numbers next year.

When I was younger Winchester for several years

ran an ad for their lever action .30-30 stating it had taken more deer than any other rifle/cartridge combination in American history.

However, I feel the .30-06 cartridge which has now been with us for over 100 years certainly may have now taken more deer than the .30-30 round. However, I do not know where I could find statistics on these matters.

Both cartridges are very fine deer rounds. I have both, hunt with both. Love both.

The 30-30 is an amazing round. The rifle is not particularly accurate by any standard of the last 30 years, It doesn't "reach" very far, yet despite this, it is still invited to hunt by a lot of people. Most are used with open sites. After all, putting a big ol honker scope on a sleek light 30-30 is like painting a nice sports car with a broom.

You know the 06 has been around a pretty good while now and just maybe it has passed up the 30-30.
The 30-06 would be my choice caliber today, 50 years ago and if I live to be a 100 I would choose it over the 30-30...As for killing more Deer who knows but we have more Deer now and I would guess more folks use a 30-06 or someother caliber so I'll guess and say the 06.

the -06 is only about a dozen years newer than the 30-30. if i were to guess i would say the -06 has killed more critters, but its impossible to say for sure.

I'm sure 30-30 has taken more, but if you need a longer shot go with the 30-06. I'd take an ,06 either way..

Probably 30-30, but thats due to the so many unscoped rifles bought 80 years ago. I have not seen many 30-30s carried in the field anymore. The majority are scoped bolt guns. I bet the 30-30 doesnt take 10% of deer now compared to other cartridges.

^ That ain't true in Arkansas.

But I personally like a bolt action rifle with iron sights.

The .30-30 is certainly good enough for deer, plenty of proof of that. But I'd vote for the .30-06 as being more versatile, as far as longer range, harder hitting, flatter shooting, more accurate, and capable of much larger animals. Besides, I own two of them! In a SHTF situation, I'd much rather have my M1 than a .30-30 carbine.

As far as which caliber has killed more deer, I'd also vote for the '06. There's been a LOT of men that used that caliber in military and combat, then came home and hunted with surplus rifles. JMHO.

Wow I really get a kick out of all the blanket statements in this thread. How is one person going to know the number of people in their state that uses a certain rifle caliber over another. I would venture to guess that they are close as far as deer go. The real question is which has killed more people?

I'm not entirely sure about this so please correct me if I am wrong, but when you say the 06 is only a dozen years younger than the 30-30 you have to remember that the 30-06 was a military round, and I am not sure when widespread use by the public, and general deer hunting population probably didn't get a hold of the round until long after it conception...

Like I said I am not sure, but I still believe the 30-30 has the edge. Both my grandfathers have hunting pictures of when they were young and everyone has a 30-30. One deer hunting picture I remember consists of 10 guys standing around a PILE of deer (Ahhh the good old days...There were way more than ten deer in that pile) Everyone of them had a Winchester 30-30 in their hands. That pic was taken sometime in the late 30's. If I can get my hands on it I will post it, but I haven't seen it in years.
