model 70 featherweight 25-06

I am thinking about buying a winchester xtr model 70 featherweight in .270 cal. I have not seen the rifle yet, but the owner tells me the barrel was stamped 257 roberts--then that was stamped out and restamped 25.06. Should i be concerned about this or is this something other guns have had. The serial # is isg 1630xxx. Can someone shed some light on this.
Thanks
ron

Slug it at the chamber and muzzle. Be sure what you're looking buy.

It would seem this gun was a 257 Roberts and the previous owner had it reamed up to the 25-06, hince the stamp over. Now the question is why the rechamber, was the previous owner not happy with performance (unlikely) or was it a cheaper alternative to a shot out throat (most likely). If it were me, I would buy the gun with the mindset that it was getting a new barrel.

Danger

Have this gun checked out. There are some real differences between the .270 and the .25-06.

Safety is most important. I would think about a new barrel in the caliber of your choice.

On above featherweight

Sorry, but there was a typo in my post. The gun i am looking at is now a 25.06 that was stamped 257 roberts--it had nothing to do with a 270. Sorry ron

Sounds like someone had it rechambered.

Get a cerocast made of the chamber and find out exactly what the rifle has. Also do a twist check and see if the barrel has 1 in 10 or 1 in 12 twist rate. The 1 in 12 is too slow for the heavier 25 caliber bullets available in some 25-06 ammo. You probably wouldn't be happy with a 25-06 that your heaviest weight bullet with any accuracy is 75 or 80 grains. Also a consideration is the OL of the box magazine. Is it long enough for ALL 25-06 loads? ........... Big Cholla
