| Super Moderator   | 20 gauge defender for home defense
Just brainstorming here, but considering its light weight combined with low recoil and full tube capacity, suppose this would be a good home defense gun with features unmatched by others? (ie long tube and in 20ga) Or would a 12ga 1300 using Aguila mini shells be better both for low recoil and higher capacity? Just thinking about many options when considering a shotgun reorganization.

You expecting to fight off a full regiment in the confines of your house? Go with the 12 guage and full size shells. Don't really think you'd need more than 5 rounds for home defense. Fire off many more than that you're gonna need a new house. LOL!!! :nod:

Hopefully this is not going to end up in a "fire-fight". One blast from any shot-gun( 410 questionable) will bring what ever is going on to an abrupt halt. Somebody else had a similiar guestion only his concern was putting holes in the walls. Hell , load that baby with rock salt ( first shot) SLUG in second. Game over! Bigger question here is are you ready to pull the trigger on somebody? Just a question. If you are thinking about," what if i break something or i`ll need spackle after this is over, etc." then you should consider another form of protection. A pistol sounds good. Lots of fire power and only......lots of small holes. Life is good. " The best part of the hunt is not the harvest but in the experience". |

The real beauty of the Twenty in home defense is for the use of women and youngsters who don't do well with the Twelve's recoil. You're a stout young man - go with the Twelve!

I have a Winchester 1300 and Aguila minishells...9 rounds before I need to reload :nod:but I'd be comfortable with a 20 gauge :right:

My girlfriend (with whom I do not cohabitate) handled an 8mm just fine, but heavy loads in the 12ga shotguns were a bit of a stresser. Might look into the 20 in the long run. But I am indeed comfortable with 12ga, just looking intyo the 20 as something that might not seem extremely manly, but would seem to be perfectly capable. I mean, a 62 caliber hole shred at least as bad as a 73 caliber hole isn't going to be anemic at all.

I picked up an 1100 Winchoke semi 20ga. for $140 off a broke friend. That rifle was great. Kick myself for selling it! I wanted to chop the barrel to 18.1", cut the overall to 26", and figure out how to get it to hold more than 2+1. Next time! |

| It's a good idea and if the 20 gauge is right for you
go with it. I keep my 12 gauge 870 loaded with alternating slug and double ought buckshot loads. I also have a Rossi 20 gauge rifled slug gun. However, I can't really say a 20 gauge will be unique among all options. Last edited by nathangdad; 11-12-2008 at 10:06 PM. |

The question is What is sufficient for a home protection shotgun for all users. The answer is a 20 ga double with the bbls cut off to 18½" and loaded with #4 buck. Almost all women and many young children can handle it and it is more than enuf for the close confines of a house. Get them out to shoot it occasionaly! Not likely that the 2nd shot would be needed even if there were 3 or 4 of them - the survivors will be gone! A 12 ga with slugs or 00 Buck will go thru 2 walls and a bunch of furnature, or 3+ walls and little or no furnature. A 20 ga with #4 buck will do about half that. Sarge

The 20ga isn't a tiny round as stated. A short barreled 20ga with a 5 shot capability is what my wife has. It is loaded with #4's.
