I doubt the 7mm Rem mag and 300 Win mag will be going away. You see them as the new thing among rifles because Winchester and Browning, both owned by FN, are pushing those rounds by making it so hard to get as many models in the traditional rounds. Try just getting a basic no frills 0-06 from Winchester - UGH! Another reason you see so many of them is that they're still on the shelves. If you like it, cool! The higher recoil is probably due to a lighter rifle, as these rounds are designed to facilitate.

yup, its definately lighter. 6 3/4 lbs i think. and that has to be the only reason for the extra recoil. all the ballistic charts ive read show the round to be virtually identical to the .300 winny. i do like it though! i have been wanting to get something bigger than my 06's for sometime now but i wanted to find one that shouldered similar to how the m-24's i had in the army did. but the remingtons ive looked at that fit the bill (sendero's) were just way out of my price range. now this model 70 isnt near as comfortable as the m-24 was but it is about the most comfortable ive found that i could afford.im just glad i got it as a gift and didnt have to throw any cash after it! lol god bless santa!

The 300 WSM may look like the 300 WM on the charts, but independent Chrony charts show it to be inferior. I see it as a good choice if you want a short action round with decidedly more power than a 30-06. Seems to fit your bill if you want something similar to the M-24.
