| End of an era?
I heard that Winchester Firearms (NOT Winchester ammunition) will likely close on March 31 unless a buyer is found. Another 200 Americans out on the streets. Oh well- I am sure there are plenty of jobs for them at Wal-Mart & McDonalds. Tis indeed a shame. |

Thank you Europe. It was a business decision by their foreign ownership no doubt. Thankfully Remington, Savage, and others are still owned AND made in the USA.

What was it Yogi said, "It ain't over 'til it's over!" I'm betting somebody will buy the plant and continue production. The 94 is as much a part of this country's history as 'cowboys and indians'. Can't just end. After all, if Kahr can be out there manufacturing M1 Carbines and Tommy Guns, which they are, then anything is possible. We must have Colt Peacemakers and Winchester 94s. And I mean new ones to shoot, not just classic collector's models. I, for one, cannot afford, and do not wish to own guns I don't shoot. eljay |

I too was deeply sad to hear about this. I hope someone picks up the plant soon. Winchester is a huge part of our History and a little of every sportsman.

Here is a quick summary of the events as they are seen in the local news. I'm from Connecticut the former gun manufacturing capitol of the USA. At one time the state had Winchester/USRAC, Remington, COLT, Meriden Firearms, Ruger, Auto-Ordnance and several other smaller companies and we were the premier makers of cartridge brass in the city of Waterbury..... This is an out-take from the Waterbury paper: Republican-American (Waterbury, CT) - January 19, 2006 Winchester rifle closing inevitable The law of unintended consequences was on display Tuesday as U.S. Repeating Arms Co. announced it would close its Winchester rifle factory in New Haven on March 31. Though everyone who got in his two cents on the closing was careful not to cast blame, the anti-gun members of Connecticut's congressional delegation, especially Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3rd District, and the anti-business, anti-Second Amendment state government should congratulate themselves for killing off another 200 jobs ... The company that owns USRAC/Winchester is GIAT a French concern that also owns FN-Browning, Olin owns the Winchester ammunition line and the patent on the Winchester name. Another former gun related plant in the local new is the former Remington UMC plant in Bridgeport, it used to be a grand building now it is considered a fire hazard and may be raized.
