Lever-Action, which one?

Hey all,

I am thinking of buying my mom a Lever-Action winchester.

She used to hunt all the time, but hasn't in probably 28 years. All of her weapons were sold or given away. She is about 50 now, and has shown interest in my purchase of a new Bushmaster AR15-type rifle. She has been wanting to go to the range with me and has been showing a renewed interest in shooting...

She likes old western movies and the whole "Cowboy America" scene, so, that is why I was looking at these.

I was looking at this one:

Model 94, Original Trails End™ Blued Round, 20"
Model 94, Original Trails End™ Blued Round, 20"

I wasn't sure which caliber would be good. I don't want something that will knock her on her butt...but, I don't want a wimpy one either.

Any suggestions on this or possibly another model?

Thanks.

The Marlin 1894 in 357 may be a good choice, among others. Thinking classic and low recoil, that rifle would be able to shoot cheap and light 38 specials for fun and target shooting, and full power 357 if you wanted longer range or hunting power.

I have a model 94AE trapper in 44 mag, I love it! My wife and daughter shoot it and it will drop a 1200lb cow with one shot at 100yds.

My guess is he's referring to a cow elk or such.

I've also got a 94AE in .44 Mag. I prefer the Marlin and would like to sell the Model 94. I like the older Marlin that doesn't require holding up on the lever.

I don't know if they still make them in lever action, but I'd like to have a 308 Winchester.I would just about rather hunt with rifled slugs and a 12 gauge than a lot of the really short cased large caliber cartriges such as the 45 long colt, and like company.I think lever actions look cool, but a lot of the calibers they come in are not very well suited for hunting,in my humble opinion.

I agree that some of the calibers are best suited for hunting, but you can say that if you hit what you are shooting at, chances are good that it isn't going to go very far.

For me, though, I just like the looks of them.

I was looking at the Marlin 1895 45/70...man, what a hog that one is. The ammo isn't cheap either. I guess I would go for a 336C in a 30/30 or .44 mag maybe. The ammo isn't quite as costly. And when you spend a lot of time at the range, the 45/70 rounds can get quite expensive quite quickly.
