How old is my rifle?

Hi guys new poster here.

I have recently came to own a great Winchester model 70 270.

I was hunting with it not to long ago and an older gent had a look at it and started to coo over it. He says its an older gun but made when they were made with care.

Anyways it sat in a closet for quite a few years till the owner passed away and as i understand it was a gift and he never fired it once.

the ser# 61070xxx
Winchester model 70-270

wood stock with dark ebony cap at the front and chekerd pattern.
the bolt is very nice swirled pattern
And the gentleman who looked at it says ther was no machining marks and says it was detailed more the the newer ones.

Thanks

Thumbs up

HOTROD...congratulations on taking posession of a fine hunting rifle. I am not familiar with your exact Winchester but no doubt there's members here who will be able to tell you more about the Mod 70 Win .270.

Good luck.

BTW...I would suggest that you edit your post showing the entire Serial Number. In it's place simply use x's instead of the last two or three S.N.'s. The reason being that it's probably not a good idea telling the world exactly what serial numbers you have for your guns. There's plenty of historical reasons that indicate it not prudent to give out those numbers. It all get back to Amendment #2 of our USA constitution.

P.S.

Check out the following link from auction arms for the gun value of one Winchester Model 70 in .270.
PRE-64 WINCHESTER MODEL 70 .270 CAL - Auction: 7754484 (Ends 12/10/2006, 16:38:18 PST)

Hotrod,
With a serial Number that high and I believe the first digit is a "G" and not a 6
your rifle is a post '64 made in 1971. all post '64 model 70 rifles began with serial number 700,000... value today is around 450-500 dollars in top shape.
hope this helps.
Rich
