| Lever Action Shotguns?
On an on-line gun auction I saw a something called "WINCHESTER MODEL 9410 SHOTGUN", which looked like a regular 94 Model rifle (to my untrained eye). Why would someone have a lever action for shotguns (which I always associated with putting two shells into a double barrel gun that opens like a hinge)? Were these types of Winchesters popular? |

It may be one of those 410 ga. lever actions

The 410 is similar enough in size and shape to levergun rounds that it was easy to adapt the model 94 to shoot them. Why? If you want a lever action shotgun. Me, I'm not a levergun guy at all. My shotguns are all single shot, pump action, or semi-auto. My rifles are bolt action, pump action, and semi-auto. My pump action rifle was derived from a pump action shotgun. You can also get break open single or double barreled rifles. You can get bolt action shotguns and lever action shotguns using the same technology that makes the same types of rifles. They're just not as common as the pumps, autos, singles, and doubles.

Thanks for your replies. What is the range of a shotgun like that?

A 410 gauge is a classic squirrel gun down here - plenty good at typical squirrel range - 25 to 50 yards. The .410 has enough knock down power with slugs for deer hunting within it's range limits. Comparable to a BP rifle, I'd say. I have a Single-shot bolt-action .410, but would love a Winchester 9410 - they are out of my price range though. The advantage is a proven design, faster than a boltie to cycle the action. There is a Chinese-made copy of the older Winchester lever-action 12 gauge too - remember the one Arnie carried in T-2? An old classic. It can be cycled and fired one-handed - if you have Arnie's biceps. So, think of it as simply another tool available to America's gunowners - not for everyone, but enough to make it marketable.
