What was the specific purpose/function of the "saddle rings" on the Winchester 94 rifles, and why are they only on some of them?

The ring was to tie-off the rifle to the saddle,to keep is secured,not to have it pop out of the scabbard and lost.Winchester stopped putting rings on 94s years back,you can still buy rings as aftermarket.
