| Senior Member | Winchester Model 1897 I recently came into posession of a 12 Gage, Winchester Model 1897 Take-down model. It has seen some better days, but I think it is still salvageable. I'm planning on taking it to a gunsmith to have him check it out, after I clean the **** out of it. The barrel is pretty dirty, and I'm sure rusty on top of that. It also looks as if sometime in the life of this shotgun, it was shortened. The barrel is not entirely square, and doesn't look to be crowned. It does have a bead sight at the end of it. If the barrel isn't sound, I'll probably end up replacing it with a 20" riot length, or trench gun barrel. I'd like to configure it to a replica trench gun eventually. I was wondering if anybody knows of any kind of manual floating around out there. I managed to figure out how to take it down, but I need something that tells me how to really take apart the action to clean it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

| Senior Member | That helps a lot Joe. I'm still going to try to find something in print, but I can print out that webpage for now. I think Skennerton makes something. It's just a matter of finding it at the next gunshow, or online somewhere. Always good to see a fellow New Yorker on here. |

| Senior Member | I was just kidding. I'm an operator on Unit #2. I used to work for Con Edison, but they sold the plant in 2001, and all of the operators went with it. Now it's one big happy family run by Entergy. Last edited by littlejoe872; 05-29-2007 at 07:51 PM. |

| Senior Member | Model 97 Update Well, I finally found time to get to the range, and I took the Winchester 97. I had posted on another thread about what size shells to use. Well, I had bought a box of Sellier & Bellot 2 1/2", low brass field loads. After some discussion, and further investigation, I found that 2 3/4" shells should work, no problem. So I also went out and got some Federal, 2 3/4" #8 field loads. I used both today, and they both worked fine. No noticable over-pressure issues. The only issue I ran into today was the failure to eject the spent shells. I ended up having to pull out the spent shell using my finger. But, other than that, no other problems. I'm thinking that the ejector spring may be weak, and that is giving me the problem. It'll extract the old shell no problem. Update on the Update Took the extractor spring out, and sure enough, it's broken. Ordered one from Numrich, so I should get it later this week, or early next week. Will keep you guys posted. | If you have a Gander Mt. close to you, they carry manuals on a most of the Winchester. They are always were the Gunsmith is or in the reloading section.
