Needed..barrel for an 1897

I inherited a Winchester Model 1897 that has some unfortunate barrel damage and need to find a replacement barrel. According to the serial number it was made around 1904 (SN 229504). I was told that the barrel is too short, what is the proper way to measure it?

Here is a link for an 1897 Trenchgun Barrel available. You measure from the breech where the shell is seated to the end of the Barrel. Federal Law requires 18 inches ( 18.1 is better so there is no question as to legality!)

Thanks, unfortunately it is only the jacket and not an actual barrel. If I open the breech I can see the end of the barrel and I measure 18" but when I took it to Cabelas they told me it was too short. How do I know for sure, should I take it apart to measure the barrel accurately. I am a little confused on the matter of barrel length.....

Insert a FIRED 12 ga. hull into the barrel. Measure from the back end of the hull to the end of the barrel. This is the actual length, Not including the rear end of the barrel that goes into the reciever that sticks out behind the breech...That is how they are measured.

IMO, Mooseman's advice is just as good as hearing it from a gunsmith.

I called a reputed gun smith in our area and he told me to close the breach and stick a rod down the barrel until it touches the bolt face, mark the rod, pull it out and measure from the end of the rod to the mark. I did so and got a measurement of 18 1/8". Is this bad boy legal?
