| 1 little problem though
My 490 won't just fall apart like the god book says when you take out the front "Phillips"screw. For some reason my bolt hangs both coming out and going back in. The only way I can get it out or in is to loosen the two big screws that hold the trigger assembly to the receiver. That's OK but I wonder why if I take both these screws out of the trigger assembly why it won't fall free from the receiver with the bolt assembly out. Then I could see what the problem is, (problems are). I'm afraid to just grab onto the trigger assembly and jerk for fear of bending or breaking something. It feels like it still attached (binding) by a stiff spring in the center. The rifle fires just fine and I have no problems with it and I don't want to hurt it.

Bakendeuce, I couldn't get the large screw out that was supossed to be a phillips head until I loosened the screws in the trigger housing. I also had trouble getting the slide out until I backed out a screw. Just did it a few weeks ago and I can't remember how I released it. They didn't explain it very well in the manual. Do you have a '32 Ford? I'd love to have a coupe with a '50's Olds or Cadillac engine. |

| 32 Ford ?? Nope
I had a 34 convertible when I was a kid. paid 200.00 for it. Thought I was screwed. No, we build airplanes, The Bakeng Deuce as a matter of fact. Go to Bakeng Deuce Home Page. Now, that's more fun than a 32 Ford, promise ya. But none of this answers the questions about those 2 fucking screws and why this gun doesn't just fall apart when you do what the manual says. The guy who wrote the manual finished the manual while the damn gun was still on the drawing board. The author never saw the damn gun, and how it turned out. I bet everyone at the factory really had a good laugh over the manual that didn't fit the gun. "Hee Haw . . .let's design another one, and think up another fantasy manual." Boy, I bet they had fun at Winchester. Austin |

Good download but I have all that in my owners maunal. Still, good info... My line of thinking was to always clean any firearm as soon as possible after firing, everytime. I know people will say you don't have to clean them after every shoot, but being from upstate new york, my guns always came in from the cold, many times from under several inches of water , ice, and snow, hunting bluebills, geese and golden-eyes on Lake Ontario. They were, and still are, some of my best friends...... So, you build airplanes, huh??? I have several close friends who fly, and one of them owns a nice Cessna. One of my farmer neighbors has a gorgeous Stintsin, just plane beautiful. An old and dear friend, long gone now, was a flight instructor during the second world war..I saw your plane web page, just beautiful!!! Last edited by .22hustler; 12-14-2007 at 10:33 AM. | Big time help on the 490
OK here goes. The screws: Use a wrench and completely remove the rear hex bushing. Loosen the front screw about 1 1/2 turns. Remove the barrel now. Now, you can remove the front screw completely without touching the front trigger assembly. OK, now cock the bolt like the good book says. Now loosen the trigger housing screws pretty loose. I took my rear one all the way out but left the spanner scew loose but still in. Now pull the trigger. Bang Bang. Now pull the cocking lever out and the bolt will fall out. Clunk. Now clean all the pieces. Eat a sandwich, make love. Now put the nifty clean bolt back in. Put the clocking lever back in, tighten in the rear screw but still about 1 turn loose.Cock the gun and lock it open and tighten the front spanner screw all the way down as well as the rear one. Now put the clip holder back on and insert only front screw and screw it in but leave it loose. Put the nifty clean barrel back on and put the clip back on and insert that rear rear hex stud/screw and tighten everything up. It should go bang bang( you have to make the sounds for it) and everything should be happy. Do it again if there are doubts. Now, if you still want to get the front screw out the old way - that front screw is a 10-32 x 5/15 long. Go to an industrial supply and buy a 10-32 Phillps cap screw x 3/8 long and cut or grind down to 5/16 long and the cap screw head will clear everything on the way out and in, like the phillips head picture thinks it should, or hoped it would. However the key is actually removing the rear hex bushing and barrel all the way and then the loose clip holder can move rearward enough to get the front screw out without any problems. I did go to the range friday and shot about 150 rounds. Filthy. Plus my wife kicked my ass with her 1022. Noticed last night while cleaning guns - her 1022 not filthy. Oh, buy the way there was an old basatard there about like me who looked at my rifle and said, " Oh, what a beautiful rifle, That's a 490 isn't it ? had one myself many years ago, beautiful gun, absolutely loved it,hated the damn thing, impossbly to clean, got rid of it, too fucking much trouble." I smiled and said, "Oh, I've never had any trouble with mine !" I bet he walked away and said to himself, "that fucking liar." austin |

Read with extreme interest the whole story. I seem to be able to get that one screw out by jiggling it around, but I will get a cap screw and make it up like you suggested. I laughed like hell at your last two statemenrs, about the old guy and your lack of trouble!!!!!!! My son is finally home from collge now the next six weeks, and I'll have him help me down load some pix of the new girl.. Thanks for all the dialogue, info sharing, or whatever else you want to call it..I think we got this kid pretty well licked. Keep in touch, and I'll try and get some pix downloaded within the next couple of days....Loren

| 490 and 88
Loren, I've been out of town. Drove a new Henry up to Milw. for my Grandson for Christmas and turned around and drove right back. 2400 miles, non stop. My back hurts. Pictures are wonderful. When Winchester made the 490 I read somewhere that it was made like an other rifle for training on 22 as opposed to the larger shell of the other. Was it the 88. That's a beautiful rifle too. Pretty pictures. Merry Christmas. Austin |

Hi Austin. Hope the back gets better!! The 490 was based on the M-100. Both are good-looking guns. I want my son to get a 100 in .308 to complete the three rifles I think are the best looking guns from Winchester. The 100 had problems with slam-firing, but I believe a firing pin change, and keeping everything clean is the correct fix. Sincerely hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year!! Loren.. |

Hi Guys - I've owned a 490 for umpteen years, but set it aside when Canada went nuts with their gun laws but I have now decided to bring it out to try and reduce the local gopher population. Problem is somehow I can't seem to locate the clips I had. I had a five shot and 2 10 shot clips. Do any of you know where I could get replacement clips, preferably in Canada? Also I would appreciate it if any of you could email a copy of the manual for this rifle. That has gone as well. Thanks for any help you can give me. |

Hi Firehose. You can still get the magazines here in the US but I'm not sure where about in the frozen north.I believe Brownells have them.....I just checked my Numrich catalog and they have both the 5-shot, and the 10-shot.Item # for the five shot mag is 198690 at $17.15 apiece, and for the 10-shot mag, the item number is 251030 at $ 18.05 apiece.Their phone # for placing orders is 1-866-686-7424. I will try and make a copy of the manual for you, but I'm no computer genius. Just a bad speller.. |

Thanks for your quick response .22hustler! I don't know if I can bring them across the border, will have to check into that. Sure would appreciate the manual too, no big hurry though.

Firehose, go to ebay as they have your owners manual there. It's a reproduction, but still a manual. The item number is 130219981833, the cost is $7.75, plus a couple of bucks shipping. The store is called Rediscovered Shooting Treasures. Hope this helps...
