| 300 Win Mag Model 70
I am considering the purchase of a used Model 70 300 Win Mag S/N G302862 and I am trying to determine when it was manufactured and a fair price for it. It looks like it has the Pre-'64 action and it is in very good condition. I went to one site and typed in the Serial Number and it said to remove the letter "G". I did and it came back as a 1954 year of Mfg. Is this reliable? Thanks! Chuck Shaw |

| If Winchester has the letter "G" stamped . . .
into the steel I am lost as to why it would be removed in finding the manufacture date. If you have a pre-64 it has value but certain factors will enter into the price such as the quality of the wood in the stock, wear from firing, scratches and dings in the stock, quality of bluing, and so on . . . It would not be fair to you for me to post a price off the top of my head. I advise inspection by a gunsmith or knowledgable person in your area. |

Me too, I wonder why the site doesnt want the G so I am suspicious of the answer. It says 1954, but I'm not sure I have any confidence in it. The site is armscollectors.com. Thanks for your answers. I had a gunsmith look at it and he thinks it may have been used once for a trip out west and that was it. It looks nice, but I'm just an occasional hunter headed for my first elk hunt in Wyoming. |

That rifle would be a Re-Introduced "Classic" Model 70 from 1990--on. ALL G-prefix serial numbers are Post 64... IT is NOT a Pre-64.... Fair price for a used one is 500 or Less....Depends on Condition ! Rich

| THANKS!
Thank you very much. The rifle looks new, so this makes sense. The retailer and I suspected this when I looked at it. Asking price is $500. When the site came back 1954, it made it a little more exciting. This forum was very helpful to a newbe like me. Thanks again. |

| Did you mis speak? I don't recall pre-64's were made in 300Win Mag. at least I've never seen one. 300H&H and 338 Mag and 264 Mag. sure enough. You occasionally see a pre-64 in 300 Weatherby but it is a 300H&H that has been rchambered.

| WOW
I didn't realize that they made any 300's before 64. I've seen some rare ones over the years too, carbines, 7mm's, etc. I have a 30H&H which I really like.

Mooseman684 is correct. 300 Win. Mags were all made in 1963. There were a few made without sights. How many nobody knows, not even Winchester. They were called Class-4 Special Order rifles.
