Winchester Model 88

I have an 88 that has a serial number and all the characteristics of a pre 64 except the serial number has an "A" suffix. I don't see an "A" listed in any of my books. Anyone have any helpful information?
Thanks in advance.

I believe the Carbines were marked with an A suffix...but they were not introduced until 1968.

Thanks for the reply. Mine has a 22" barrel, diamond checkering, and no barrel band just like the pre 64s.

I'm pretty sure that the "carbine" model would be a 19" barrel, with smooth, non-checkered stock and barrel band around the forend. I have a Winchester model 100 rifle and a carbine, both with an "A" preffix and a post '64 Model 88 rifle with an "A" suffix. I'd be pretty sure with the diamond checkering, it's more than likely a pre '64, unless restocked or a "leftover" stock was used. GREAT rifle, you've got there!

Here is a reply I got on another forum.

"A" SUFFIX STARTED IN 1962 THRU 1969,WITH MECHANICAL DESIGN CHANGES,"H" SUFFIX,1970 TO THE END,TRANSITION RIFLES WERE THE CHANGE FROM CHECKERING TO THE START OF BASKETWEAVE STOCKS,WHICH WERE HAND DONE,TO MACHINE PRESSED ON IN THE LATE 1964.

You might want to post here as the "expert" you profess to be. Simply my opinion, as you had no problem telling me how wrong I was on a previous posting. Of course, you might not remember that!

I posted what I knew about that Rifle, But there is NOT a lot of Info available about that rifle and Nothing on the serial numbers in the list I have. Winchester can be contacted with questions about serial Numbers...

Not that you needed anyone defending you, I just thought it was kind of lame to hold onto something in the hopes you'd someday get even so to speak. Life's just to short to hold onto attitude or anything else for that long ya' know.
