| My opening weekend Opening morning dawned nice and sunny as usual The river was still up but thats life, I was surprised how quickly most of the flood water had left the area. It's the first time I've shot down on the Tairie for about five or six years, so I was looking forward to seeing how it shot. Went and saw the cocky at lunch time on Friday, then down to the river at four to set the mai mai and decoy's up. I had two young fella's shooting with me, the older one has done a fair bit of duck shooting but his younger brother is pretty new to the sport. We did pretty good for the area, between us getting 25, but the dog was working with the river flowing so fast We didn't hear to much shooting from other hunters in the area and talking to a couple of them they only got around eight between each of the other mai mai's. So pretty happy considering we didn't do any work to this spot before hand. The biggest problem was getting the older brother to not shoot, typical young fella know's it all! " I've got them at that range before". Drove me mad! The younger one did some very nice shots, when his brother gave him half a chance. We went around trying to do some jump shooting, and didn't see any birds in all the old holes I used to shot, don't know why, there just didn't seem to be many bird's away from the river. Must be something to do with the flood water (I hope). Also the boy's had a very poor shoot up Ranfurly way which is very unsual considering they normally get 200+.
