| Senior Member | SevenŠ Thanks for the nice comment on the shotgun sir. This Springfield 12 Ga.5100 double made by J Stevens Arms Company Chicopee Falls Mass. is a 1932 made to sell by "Sears" and Rearbucks....LOL...I just refinished the stock and took the welding spot look off the receiver. It was reblued in 1992 by a friend that had retired from teaching. He also took a couple of dings out of the barrel, used a torch for the receiver effect that i did not really like, but overall this gun has a lot of history to me and i use it quite often. I was very happy with the way my friend brought this gun back to life. It was a very inexpensive gun at the time, that another friend left me from his will. It was all i got from him, and i enjoy taking it along with me hunting, for it is like taking two old friends back into the woods for a good day together as a reminder of his presents. I also would like to thank Elmer for letting us get involved in a favorite topic. Take care all! and keep the lead flying.......earl Last edited by Earl Easter; 04-07-2008 at 08:45 AM. Elmer Fudd, I grew up on a farm in Illinois about 25 miles south of Springfield. 50 years ago there were no pheasants in our area. We had to drive 100 miles north to hunt wild pheasants. A few pheasants started showing up on our farm and adjoining properties about 25-30 years ago. I now live in SE Virgina. The only pheasant hunting here is on pay-to-hunt preserves. It is expensive-$100 for 4 pheasants or 10 quail. A friend and I have taken a couple of "Blast and Cast' trips to Montana We hunted CRP and private lands on the Fairfield Bench north and west of Great Falls. There are pheasants there (also sharptails and Huns) but it involves a lot walking in those wide open spaces. In January just before the season ended I hunted on the family farm in Illinois for the first time in over 30 years. Wasn't sure if there was any game left. My nephew and I flushed 4 small covies of quail (5-7 birds in each) 3 hen pheasants and one cock pheasant. I got the pheasant with my first shot using a 16 ga. Model 90 O/U with 1 oz. #8 game loads. Given my low expectations, I thought it was a very successful hunt. I have always wanted to go pheasant hunting in SD but have never done it. I have a chance to go hunting on a friend's place in NE Nebraska. Anyone know how the pheasant hunting is in that area? |

probobly just like it is around here you walk through thick grass and flush them up yourself unless you have a dog.

I've been making the pilgimage to pheasant mecca twice a year for the last few years. I just love SD. I've had to go late in the season due to work schedules and the hunting has been hard but productive. Gas prices this year may keep me home unless I can find someone to split costs with.

ya i know what you mean like i live in SD but like if i wanted to shoot a huge deer i would have to travel a long ways and we would use a pickup and that wouldnt get very good gas milage so it would be VERY expensive!

Thanks for the comments about the old coach gun, Earl. Yes, she throws a VERY nice pattern for hunting over my Brittany, but when anything flushes further than a stone's throw, the son takes it with the 1300 Winny. Him using a modified choke in a 24" 1300 and me with the SxS is a great combination for birds at various ranges. I just try to keep the Brittany closer to me.

It isn't well known, but the Sacramento and San Jauquin valleys or full of Pheasant. I lived in that area for many years and sure miss hunting them. I also miss the Duck, Quail, Goose, and Rabbit hunting.

I live in a south suburb of Denver, in the middle of a very residential neighborhood. A couple of years ago, I was going somewhere and there, walking down the sidewalk about 200 feet from my back door, was two pairs of pheasants! Two cocks and two hens, just strolling down the sidewalk like they were walking a dog. A very strange sight in that area, I couldn't believe it.

Nice to see some pheasant hunting going on over the pond.I help run a pheasant shoot over here.I dont know how you do it over there but here we get the birds in next weekend as poults, pen them up for about 6-8 weeks, then they are released. We dont start shoot days untill end of oct or normally first week in november. We release about 1000 birds with an expected return of about 40%(on a good year)On the bigger shoots like "whitfield" they release up to 50,000 birds a year. There is no limits over here on birds you can shoot. You stop shooting when "you" think you should stop shooting.I will dig some pics out of our shoot and stick them up if thats ok

I got two questions elmer fudd. 1) Do you leave the skin on the pheasant when you fry it? 2) I heard the pheasant population is so good in SD they are claiming it is close to 1967-68 populations? I lived out there during those years. My brother and I are talking about going out there this fall for pheasants...got relatives and WE LEAVE THE SKIN ON DANG IT THAT'S WHERE ALL THE FLAVOR IS.
