| Senior Member | Must of been a German thing my mothers side did. My relatives on east side of SD ranging up from Mitchell down to Yankton mostly around Parker, Hurley area. Most of them farmers. Hmmmm...pheasant population so good they may raise limit? We used to have hunters come up from North and South Carolina. My Uncle just met them on a gravel road one day, struck up a conservation and became good friends with them. We'd have a big feed every year of pheasants and put out some rocky mountain oysters pork and beef. It was the first time I ever drank liquor and had me a "chaw" of tobaccy. Didn't like either...esp the tobaccy. I remember what seemed us kicking up hundreds of birds. I think we had up to a dozen guys walking...no dogs.

| Exalted Grand Poobah ![]() | I have nothing of value to add. I just like checking this thread. The pheasant/quail/grouse population here is near zero. I haven't had a bird dog in 15 years. But, this thread brings back memories of good times. Memories of me, my dad, my grandad. Saturday afternoons. A '76 Ford SuperCab. Beanie-Weanies, saltines, and ice water. Pointers and Setters. Side-by-sides and over/unders. Only city slickers used autos and pumps. My apologies for a non-value post. But, keep the stories and pictures coming.

| Senior Member | I checked on the South Dakota opener...October 18 and non-resident 10 day license $110.00 for 3 cocks a day total of 15 in possession. Hunting and Fishing License Fees Like I say from what I'm hearing if a guy/gal ever wanted to experience pheasant hunting populations they haven't seen in South Dakota for a long time this be the year. Some of those days we were out in 1967-68 I remember having so many birds get up it was like a popcorn popper at peak pop.

| Pheasant populations are up the last number of years here too. Not anything like the hot spots in SD, but still very good. They even lengthen the season a couple years back. With elimination of DDT and the advent of the CRP really helped. I remember not even having a season some years as a kid. And then when you did it was short, and if you seen a bird you were lucky. Then too, the DNR keeps buying more lands for public hunting. I'm not sure exactly how much now, but couple years back our county alone, had well over 3000 acres of public lands. With some parcels big enough you could spend the whole day in and not cover it all. Now if you don't limit out on opener within a hour, you need to get back to the trap range. Dave |

| Senior Member | I'm east of the ''Seven'' and birds are gone. Before the ''Seven'' was born we walked them up, while rabbit hunting![]() Now those places are all gone. You all have reminded me of that time and places. Thanks

| Man, I'm glad you brought this one up. I am going to go pheasant hunting for the first time in SD. never have had a chance to hunt them birds, and a buddy I work with is going to show me the ropes. My question is a 20 gauge enough gun? If so 3 inch or 2 3/4? I am thinking 5 shot, let me know.. |

| Senior Member | Yep postin pictures of our birdguns ta hold us over till the season starts again. Thats if Elmer don't mind. Also some more pheasant pictures would suit me and i would bet Elmer won't mind atall...LOL... Lordy, Seven thats a Jane Dandy,i was gonna say jim Dandy but ya called that fine shooter "Her"...I could help ya get her smokin again..LOL.. Fishpond That will do, but for me i need the 12 ga. only have one eye and need all the help i can get. 5 shot 6 shot works. As far as the 3" or 2 3/4 i have been known to use both and my shotgun will accept both.. 3" i will use in the dense, thick areas.... |

| Senior Member | Hey Jack Thats ok we don't have any of them purty birds left that are natural. We are stuck with the stocked ones the state puts out. But now ya got my attention about the grouse,we have plenty of those rockets around that make a great day of hunting.. |

| 20 gauge will work just fine with 2 3/4 # 5 shot. I hunted with and old timer that used a 28 gauge and had no problem bring birds down. Plus you will like weight of the 20 gauge when you have been in the field all day. |

| Senior Member | Ruger Red Label O/U 12 ga. 28". I have not shot at any pheasants yet but have ran a few hundred shells out of her at some clays. I don't care for the illuminated sights that much cause they are so big. But the hits are right on so far. This is what i will take this season. http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/att...1&d=1217120684 http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/att...1&d=1217120973 |
