| I know this is an old thread, but Welcome to G&G Harrys! Anyway, being from South Dakota, Pheasant are the king of game birds. But if you want a challenging hunt that might just piss you off cuz the buggers move so fast, go dove hunting. Most fun i've ever had, if not a little frustrating at times. ![]() |

| Senior Member | I like the dove also. I say a lot of swear words that i have never heard before....LOL. But the grouse are better tasting. "Timber Doodles", AH i have never heard that one. Gonna use it in my vocabulary words from now on |

| I grew up hunting bobwhites here in NC. In Wis. I got hooked on the few ruffed grouse I flushed (no dog then) in the s. part of the state. Mn was heaven in the early '70's (top of the cycle). I am headed to KS in Nov w/ my Fr. Brittany (Plum Creek boy) for bobwhites and ringnecks in WIH areas. Another year back to Wis for grouse. Wish us luck! Bonasa PS: the latter gets my vote |

| around here we have ptarmigan which are relatively easy to hit in open spaces, spruce hens that are easy to hit because they are sruce hens, and ruffs that are hard to hit because they are ruffs. my vote for this area is for the ruffs. |

| Best tasting: Ruffed Grouse. Best looking: Pheasant Most fun to hunt if you love to watch a dog work: Pheasant. (It's a dance, Gentlemen, a dance.) Most fun to hunt if you like heart-stopping, impossible shots in woods too dense to swing a hand, much less a shotgun, while having your legs torn to shreds by briars and multiflora rose as you trip and stumble only to hear the darned bird rocketing out from behind you: Grouse. YMMV

Don't understand why at this time of the year, the ruffs around here will hold for point and flush wide open such that I can draw a bead with my cap pistol... However, next month (after the season opens), they wont hold for shit, run to the far side of dense cover, and find every scrap and twig to put between us when they do flush in range!!! | |

| We have ruffs, blues, sage, and sharp tail here. Occaionally see a hun or chucker. Love to hunt them all. Best eating is definatly the ruffies. Used to live where we could hunt phesant and turkey (if you call that an upland game bird). No phesants here though, too cold. too bad becase I think they may be my favorite eater.
