I think I would be most interested in learning how to use and shoot a handgun. Can you start training with a handgun, or must you start (or do you suggest starting) with something else? Thanks for the advice so far, Dale. I definitely will show this post to BRG3 (who is going to teach me).

Like I said, I know nothing, I mean nothing, about these things. I don't know where to start. What kind of a gun is a Ruger .22?

Ruger MKII in .22 caliber, semi automatic. should be ideal starter gun for a newbie.

Papa's right on the money.

Learning a handgun with a .22 is a great way to go. In addition to the Ruger .22 I have the Browning Buck Mark .22 semi auto. It's a great little gun and accurate as all get out.

Plus you can practice till the cows come home for a fraction of ammo cost of, say a 9MM or larger.

BR's got a good head on his shoulder and I'm sure he'll steer you in the right direction and teach you well.

If you're a beginning shooter you'll likely not have any bad habits to correct...that's a BIG help. And as BR knows, learning the shoot isn't just about loading up a gun and go boom until you hit something.

It's also about safety, shooter responsibility, cleaning of the gun, mechanics of the gun, knowing local laws, lot's of practice, etc.

Good luck, SRX, I'm sure you'll do just fine in time.

A Ruger .22 is what my wife started with. I have a pic I could scan sometime, she looks frightened shooting it. However, in a year she was shooting the .45 and .357

Talking Start with the Ruger MarkII

Grip angle is very similar to the 1911

lol lots of advice. I appreciate it all. Yes, BRG3 is very good with safety. He's forever explaining safety practices to me (which is a very good thing). Now I have a lot of great advice on what to start with from you guys. All I need now is for Mom to consent to letting me start...... (since 1/3 of the year, I still live under her roof)

Thanks. Can you rent these kinds of guns at shooting ranges, or do you need to buy them to shoot with them?

Many commercial ranges do rent them, I was thinking just that. They don't have everything to offer, but they do have a variety. A good way to see if a gun is right for you.

At the indoor commercial range I've gone to, it's $5 per half hour. Not bad at all, considering that to really get your money's worth out of it you'd end up spending more on ammo, unless it's maybe a 22.

Lowest price on centerfire pistol ammo I've seen is $0.10 per round. Shoot 5 10 round mags and you've spent as much on ammo as the rental. I went all out one day when hosting multiple people while under the influence of infatuation, and including ammo spent about $50. If you recall, I once spent that much on dinner for two including lobster and alchohol.

Of course, I was just saying a lot of shooting at a commercial range doesn't have to cost very much. I just couldn't do it every week...

I still see some of that laundry out there...
