The more I think about it the more I think shoot to kill is a safer strategy than to disarm. What I've always learned was shoot to disarm. It's really something I have to think about before I get into that situation. At one end I don't want to have that burden on my mind if I kill someone. On the other end I don't want that person coming back for me.

Also, in a situation that requires you to defend yourself, your mind and body will be reacting in a way you can't possibly practice with or predict. Your odds of disarming someone are lower. Aiming for center mass is the best bet and the easiest shot and it will hopefully stop them in less time with fewer shots fired. As I usually tell customers, "You want to stop them from killing you; their death is an unfortunate possible side effect."

Don't get me wrong,I'm not against using a gun for self defense. I'm a good shot and if I have to use a gun for self defense I will. I hope it never has to be my first option. I do believe there are many times that a gun won't even be an option so learning physical defense classes are as important as handling a gun. Many times the issue won't even come up if you don't act the victim and do stay alert of your surroundings. Many criminal perpetrators are actually bully's and pick an easy mark. They find someone not alert in their surroundings or not visibly confident. Not always but it narrows down the times any one will bother you.

Nice post Joe. Direct and to the point. If you live in a rural area or sometimes even in the city, by the time the Leos answer your 911 call the action is already over. If you can't protect your own then the body count taken will be you and yours. If you can then it will be the predators.

I was just going to mention my friend up in Montana who is in jail. He got 25 years. Most of the older members know his story. He tried to defend himself one night and pulled his gun out and told this guy who attacked him to back off, the guy was high on drugs and alcohol and grabbed for the gun got his finger caught in the trigger guard, the gun went off and he got shot in the stomach. he went to the hospital and was Ok. The both had there hands on the gun fighting on the ground when the cops came. My friend had his FFL and a very big gun collection. He also had his expolsives licence. Never been in trouble had a clean record. When he went to court they would not allow the jury to hear the guy was high only he was the manager of this pizza place. My friend was out riding his bike and stopped behind the place to get some pizza out of the dumpster to take home to his next door neighbor dogs. So I would say if you ever have to pull your gun on someone it better be only if your in a life and death situation. Not just to defend yourself ..... say from a fight or verbal conflict. I just got my heart ripped out when he got 25 years, people get less for murder. So ther you go... I also want to say, if you ever do get into legal trouble, your case is only good as your ATTORNEY.....Lady Di
