^this one is now in my top 5 list. (Redhead's story about the rabbit w/ the .22 got me really thinking that a 17 was the way to go for squirrel and rabbit hunting. A quick, humane kill is important to me.) BTW, I checked into it, and yes, you may use a shotgun that usually holds more than three rounds as long as you use a one-piece plug that cannot be removed w/o disassembling the firearm... thanks for the advice on that! Hummm... so many choices..so little cash! |

khahn79: Ma'am; today "by accident" I fondled the 'Rossi' Picture doesn't do it justice. Would I have one? No. I'd have it if it was multiple shot. Come in a nice box. @KMart. I was looking for some old stock .17hmr; counter person thought the Rossi was ammo? Good Luck in your findings.

For a rifle get a Marlin or winchester 30/30. The rounds have good punch yet will drop into the ground faster if you miss. A 243 or 3006 is going to keep sailing quite a while. I would not pick any shotgun that was a single shot or labeled as ultralight. Both are too light weight to adsorb recoil. Although expensive the semi auto guns are going to be more managable. Their recoil is softened by the recharging of a round. |

Ok. I'm looking into a "gently used" Ruger 10/22 at my local gun shop for squirrel hunting. I'm afraid the .17 hmr would destroy too much of the meat for squirrel hunting. I'm still trying to decide on the shotgun but I have a new contender. Mossberg has combo shotguns at a reasonable price. Here's the link: O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. - Firearms, Shotguns, Rifles, Accessories, and Precision Machining I'm looking at the "500 pump action field/deer combo" in 12 or 20 ga. Here's my question... is a 20 ga. "too much gun" for rabbit hunting? Would it destroy all the meat? If so, then I may go with the Savage Arms that Toolman listed: Savage Arms Shotgun Rifle Combo Model 24F-20 It is chambered for 17 hmr and 20 ga. Let me know what you think. Am I "on the right track" here?

Sounds like good choices to me. The 10/22 is proven to be one of the best .22 rifles out there, and you really can't go wrong with a Savage or Mossberg. I would still recommend the 20ga, but it's a personal choice for you.

khahn79: Ma'am; 12 gauge will be fine. The Ruger 10/22 outstanding choice. One of the best deals on a pump shotgun Remington 870. Remington's go on sale many times during the year here. 26"-28" barrels. Long life expectancy, weight acceptability, ease of handling, flexibility. Ma'am; all guns are compromises. Limiting factors need considerations. 10-22 100yds about the absolute limit. 17hmr flatter shooting out to [good day] 150-200yds. 17hmr ability to dispatch quicker 17hmr ability to shoot ?straighter? 17hmr cost more to shoot .22 best Diatribe without apology In about anything "I" post; Practice, and Practice properly, understand your [all of us] limitation; work to improve. We owe no one explanations; we owe the "game" everything. Be ethical, be prepared to let said "game" walk-fly-or run away before you take that ?maybe? shot

khahn, the 20 ga. will be fine for rabbits with proper ammo selection. Also remember to not shoot them at super close range if saving the meat is a priority. I prefer head shots with a .22 on cottontails but jackrabbits are fun to shoot at long range with one of my big guns.

OK. Here's what I've come up with. SHOTGUN- I'm looking at a Mossburg Model 500 Field/Deer combo in 20 gauge. Here's the specs on it: Mossberg Model 500 Field/Deer Combo (20 gauge) $289.29 24" rifled bore & 26" multi-choke (full, mod, ic) Pump action capacity: 2 3/4" 5+1 chamber: 3" Weight: 7 lbs. Overall Length: 45 1/2" vented recoil pad, sling swivel studs I like the price, that it's multi-shot, and that it's versitile. I'm thinking it would be a good "starter" shotgun...any input? .22LR RIFLE FOR SQUIRREL AND PLINKING: Three contenders here: savage arms 64fxp package series w/ scope -.22lr -10+1 cap -semi-auto -5.5lbs -open sights + 4x15mm scope -$139.99 mossberg 802 plinkster -.22lr -10+1 cap -bolt action -4.6lbs -adjust. rifle sights + 4X scope -$139.99 ruger 10/22crr -.22lr -10+1 cap -semi-auto -5lbs -hi-viz sights w/ scope mount adapter -$217.95 Any experience with or input on these rifles? Thanks so much for all the advice so far!

| lol...I hear that a lot... I wonder why? still offers lay-a-way. He told me if I was buying two guns he'd waive the usual $30/gun processing fee so I went for it. I put a down payment on the Mossberg 500 combo shotgun and a Ruger 10/22. With Christmas just around the corner and three kids to buy for I was very greatful for the lay-a-way option!

Khahn You should like the Mossberg 500 20 ga combo. My son has one, a youth model. I took it to Schuyler Co. as back up to my 870 in case a sight or something broke. He does not have a current FOID and has seemed to lost interest in hunting, so I may have a keeper. His slug barrel is smooth so e use Remington Foster slugs with secent results. You will want the sabot slugs to shoot in your rifled barrel. Yes, you can toss a few fosters down the tube, but expect alot of leading in the rifling. The 10/22. Can't say enough good about mine. I don't rabbit hunt with it as most rabbits I shoot at are in afterburner & I'm hunting over my buddy's beagle with him and possibly another person. Were hunting Jim Edgar (SiteM) Chandlerville, Saturday. Supposed to be some snow coming. Will hopefully take some pics. |
