McCain's stance on Gun Control

I have heard a lot from people on this board that McCain is largely anti-gun. I have not dug up his complete voting record on the topic, so I am not 100% sure where he stands.

My question was to those that claim he is rabidly against the 2nd Amendment; What has he done in his past to prove this? Did he vote in favor of the Brady Bill, or has he drafted any new legislation for more gun control.

Seeing as he is probably going to get the GOP ticket, it would probably be good for everyone to compile some facts here to help us make a more educated vote. Please try to use prior facts and voting records from credible sources too.

For what it's worth, NRA rated as a C last time I looked up.

The GOA rated him even worse. Mainly because he was for instant checks for all at gun shows and and banning so called Saturday Night specials. But generally, he has voted pro gun. This is just another area where he is not the best choice, but better than the alternative if he gets the nomination. In an attempt to draw the conservative base to to him, he is pushing the fact that there should be "no gun control" whatsoever. Hope he sticks to his "GUNS"

what ever it took is fine with me, just goes to show that we do have some power and influence, maybe just maybe we aren't a dying breed as portrayed in Hollwood and the news media>

I think DC and their wisdom opened a can of worms that many wish was just left alone!!

Again, I don't know if he's really that much worse than George I or II (especially after AG "what ?!" brief to SCOTUS).

The other choices are worse so I'm lost as to what to do about the whole mess. If the ship is sinking, do you get into a leaky row boat?

Maybe he will just say or do whatever it takes to get elected then continue with his own agenda.

Let's see McCain partners with Fiengold (D) Kennedy (D) on bills and then he won't back any sort of border security that would stop the flow of illegals into this country and as of recent he has also adopted the belief in the fiction called global warming.

I agree.
Look at how they have voted in the past, not what they say at election time. They will not change, only say what ever it takes to get the vote.
If Huckabee don't get it, I don't see anyone that will stand up for us.
If I vote for McCain, that means that I vote for gun control.

Huck isn't out of it yet, but in reality it does not look promising. He may have a good chance at VP if he wants it. McCain will have to pick a "more conservative than he is" for a running mate or he will not have a chance for a substantial chunk of the conservative base. He was not in the top five of my choices for president, and I am not very thrilled about how this is winding down. But it is coming down to the point where you either vote or not vote. I know everyone has already checked this out, but pull them up, and compare. You can also check how they voted on other issues:

Hillary Clinton on Gun Control
Barack Obama on Gun Control
John McCain on Gun Control
Mike Huckabee on Gun Control

At least for now, it looks to me as if it is a choice between electing a Democrat into a Democratic Congress and know that gun rights will take a beating. Or going with the GOP with the hope at least we have a chance to keep what we have now.

Just personal thought/opinion.
McCain would sign any gun control measure coming out of a Democratic Congress.
Just my own personal opinion.

I could see McCain voting teh way we want him to for 4 years, and then screwing everyone off if he got a second term.

I could also see McCain pulling a David Palmer - getting sick enough of the presidency after 4 years that he doesn't seek re-election. I think he's way off on what he thinks the presidency will be, much more so than Bush, and Bush even had some rude awakenings.

Can't disagree with anything that has been said. Pretty much feel the same way. As far as Gun Rights are concerned the choices are close to being slim and none. I will vote however, they have yet to take that away from us. So, as of now I will vote for slim before I vote for none...
