| Charlton Heston Associated Press Posted Apr 30, 2008 @ 02:00 PM KNOXVILLE TN. — He served as head of the National Rifle Association and won an Academy Award for his role in Ben-Hur. Now Charlton Heston can add another acclaim to his list: honoree of the Knox County Commission. Commissioner Greg "Lumpy" Lambert, who once drew a gun on a would-be robber at his used-car lot, proposed a resolution to honor the actor, who died April 5 at the age of 84. The resolution calls Heston a "Hollywood legend," a "prominent gun-rights advocate" and a "champion of our Second Amendment rights." It was approved Monday by a 12-7 vote. Commissioner Sam McKenzie objected to the resolution, saying such honors by the Knox County Commission should be reserved for local citizens. "The Screen Actors Guild or the NRA has probably done all kinds of things for Charlton Heston," McKenzie said, receiving a round of applause from those in attendance. Heston visited Knoxville in 2000 for an NRA meeting and twice played President Andrew Jackson, of Tennessee, in separate movie roles. Lambert is a gun enthusiast who once offered a gun voucher with every auto sale at his car lot, though only three cars were bought during the promotion. Commissioner Elaine Davis asked if Heston's family should come to Knox County to pick up the resolution. Lambert said he'd mail it to them.

He is/was a legend. I was angered to hear of the ones that soon after his death were openly admitting they were glad he's dead. Hoping he rots in hell and what not. I'm sorry, that's just wrong. I don't care how much a person is disliked or you or anyone dislikes them. When they're dead, show some flippin' respect. MHO that is.

To one and all, I apologize for offending any one by my lack of respect for him. I did respect him until 1968 and then I lost it all and just because he died doesn’t mean he automatically gets it back. I respected Jane Fonda until Vietnam then I lost it. After she dies, I still will not respect her either. Sorry

| I know he has done a lot of fund raising for the NRA. But 1968 was a little before my time, what did he do in 1968?

9mmfan, In 1968 The Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed. That was a couple of generations ago so a lot of folks don’t know or remember what life for gun owners was like before it was passed. There was more screaming and ranting then than there is now about gun control. That is when I joined the nra, to help stop any bill like that in the future. Time has passed and so have most of the folks that opposed the bill. Charlton Heston was a famous and “listened to” actor at that time. He came out very vocal in favor of GCA-68 and helped pass it. A lot of gun owners stopped loving him at that time. I worked hard for the nra for about 28 years. Sent them a large portion of my income, signed up a lot of members and ended up with a pile of hats, knives, and belt buckles. But when they made Charlton Heston head of the nra, I quit. Enough time had passed that people had forgotten. Feelings change in a couple of generations, hard feelings don’t get passed on down. My Father fought the japs in WW-ll and hated them till the day he died in 89. I bought a new Toyota pick up in 87 but he would never get in it. “You weren’t there” was all he would say. That is why they WILL take our guns away. Not “our” guns, but our grandchildren or great-grandchildren’s guns. Gun owners will get used to the laws that are in place, then the next ones will come until in a few generations there will be very few people who even want to own a gun. I may be old and the memory may not be as good as it once was, but I remember 68.
