The third party fantasy is sweet, but in the end it is still just a fantasy that will not happen in this election of 2008. I agree that the two party system needs a wake up call, but it should not be at the expense of handing the Presidency over to one of the biggest anti-gunners that ever ran for office. This being a gun forum and the subject of gun rights, I am sure it is obvious to everyone, that neither Obama or Clinton are gun owners friends. So the bottom line is pretty much as NRAjoe and TXplt has alluded to...a vote for a third party candidate or not voting at all, is simply a vote for Obama...I think Clinton is toast. If any of my fellow G&G'ers get the GUN DIGEST magazine, an article last month, I believe, pretty much stated reality. Quote " This author believes gun owners must vote for the lesser of two evils this November, which means casting ballots for John McCain." In addition the author wrote " I'm frightened by the number of gun people who say they will sit this one out. We could not make a bigger mistake. Hold your nose and vote for the guy claiming to be a Republican" unquote. The quotes were taken from the June copy of GUN DIGEST. ...You know, I am a Vietnam Vet as many others here are and I respect McCain for his honor and bravery in the war, but I have never been a big fan of his politics. After realizing that gun owners may see their darkest days approaching, I may have to hold my nose, but I'll vote for the guy claiming to be a Republican.......

NRAJOE is right folks. If everyone don't vote for McCain (and I don't care for him), then the Dem will be elected. This isn't the time to "make a statement". Our Country is on the line.

If you dont believe me look at some of the goverments in Africa that tried to create a democracy with alowing several parties. Somalia, Congo, Chad just places on a map now remeber where the warloards came from? There politicail partys. No thanks I will continue to try and fix the parties we have now and not try to make another one. Just my 2 cents. I will stop ranting now.

Actually , our fore-father's had more than just two parties, much more. I will probably be voting for McCain also, "only" because he would be better than Hillary or Obama. Even though McCain is probably one of the most liberal Republicans who has ever ran for president, just look at his voting record. He even co-sponsored a bill by Ted Kennedy for immigration reform (which was really just a form of amnesty: if you have a job you can stay, if you crossed over the border and had a baby you can stay), that's B.S.
England and Australia have more than two parties. And year after year as long as we just have two parties we will just be voting for the lesser of two evils. Well personally, I'm sick of that. This is the greatest country on the face of the earth, and to think that the best we can come up with is Hillary, Obama and McCain makes me and a lot of other people sick. It's probably to late for any independent to seriously run for president, but I sure do hope that some day that will change and we have a real 3rd party. Our fore-father's knew what they were doing alright, that's why the first 17 presidents belonged to six different parties. We didn't even have a Republican president till our 16th president Abraham Lincoln.
01 Washington, GeorgeFederalist
02 Adams, John Federalist
03 Jefferson, Thomas Democratic-Republican
04 Madison, James Democratic-Republican
05 Monroe, James Democratic-Republican
06 Adams, John QuincyDemocratic-Republican
07 Jackson, Andrew Democrat
08 Van Buren, Martin Democrat
09 Harrison, William Henry Whig
10 Tyler, John Whig
11 Polk, James KnoxDemocrat
12 Taylor, ZacharyWhig
13 Fillmore, Millard Whig
14 Pierce, FranklinDemocrat
15 Buchanan, James Democrat
16 Lincoln, Abraham Republican
17 Johnson, Andrew War Union

Actually, . . . .

. . . I feel this election we have to unite and vote a straight Republican ticket as our only viable option. There are too many close polls out there to do otherwise. We could lose our best chance to preserve our rights by voting for a startup or independent party this time around.

I pray in the future a real party of the middle class can rise.

I was a member of the CP. Unfortunately, they are not really going to go anywhere any time soon. The state parties, and especially from what I have seen in NC, are small, unorganized, and apathetic. At a state convention one year, there were only 15 people present. Three of them were not CP members.

Now would be the time to start a new party for the election in 2016. There is not enough time to get one organized before the 2008 election.
This election is not the time to wander off to some third or fourth party to make a statement. If you do, we are sure to loose.

Unfortunately, that is true, there is no way a 3rd party could win this late in the game. However, if McCain picks some people from the America First Party for his cabinet, I think it would be great.

The Obama and Hillary ticket is a nightmare waiting to happen. I will be pulling for McCain, regardless of who the democrats choose. And I will be doing everything I can to make sure the nightmare doesn't become a reality. I sure hope McCain picks a good V.P. if not, you had better start stocking up on your high capacity mags now.

I personally don't think the nightmare ticket of Obama and Hillary will win, there's just to many common sense conservatives and moderates out there to let it happen. Besides, I think Hillary has to much pride to take a back seat to anyone.

The Republicans need to loose this time.

That is hard to say being a life long conservative, but we have moved so far from being real conservatives that they need to loose, hopefully it will force them back to their base.

Neither party has a “base” anymore. The politicians just come out at election time and suck up to the voters with their lies and promises to get elected. You can not listen to what they say, they lie and mislead with words. One must look at what they have done and how they have voted in the past.
McCain has the least offensive voting record on gun laws. If either of the other two get elected, a lot of damage will be done to our gun rights that will never be undone. Now is NOT the time to “teach them a lesson”.

I agree, but I will not vote for the best of the worst.

Bob Barr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He may be running with the libertarian party. But the guy is a conservative, and his voting record backs this claim, minus the whole Patriot Act deal (he was originally for it).

Quote:
During his tenure, Barr was regarded as one of the most conservative members of Congress.[17] In 2002, he was described as "the idol of the gun-toting, abortion-fighting, IRS-hating hard right wing of American politics".[14] However, Barr's criticism of the Bush administration's encroachment on privacy and other civil liberties after the 9/11 attacks was unusual among House Republicans (see Criticism of Bush Administration below).[14] This criticism earned Barr other labels such as maverick,[14] Jekyll-and-Hyde,[18] and libertarian.[16]

Your point is well taken . . .

yet millions of people wind up (as in the 2004 election) voting for the candidate of the major party who is less offensive to them.
