Hey guys, I just picked up a Yugoslavian M76 in 8mm which I'll be hand loading for shortly. I was thinking of converting 30-06 brass to 8mm since it's much easier to find, so I did a web search and the process seems easy enough. I noticed most people doing this are Mauser owners and I was wondering if there might be any additional precautions to take since my rifle is a semi auto?

    Thanks.

None that I can think of. I have converted both 30.06 and .270 cases to 8mm. The only thing is I had to full length size them, trim to length, and resize them again to get them to cycle in my Mauser. The size up seems to mess up where the shoulder gets set without trimming, then resizing again. I believe because there was too much neck left for it to size the shoulder correctly in my dies. Once it was resized after trimming they worked perfect.

Thanks gandog, that's what the guy on youtube was doing as well. I've never done a case conversion but this one seems fairly easy.

Thanks Moose, Midway has it as well but this is a better price. I was thinking of converting a few .06 cases so I'd be familiar with the process just in case I ever had to. My local LGS has lots of once fired .30-06 brass for next to nothing.

you can definately do it, but i personally prefer to have the correct headstamp on the brass if at all possible. in my mind it just prevents the possibility of sticking a converted 8x57 into a 30-06 and pulling the trigger.

    That's a very good point but I don't have a .30-06 anymore.

Most of my 8x57 brass was once 30-06 brass. I no longer have a 30-06 and didn't want it to go to waste.

I'm a thinking it would be impossible to chamber an 8mm in a 30-06 without a BFH handy. And real sure would need a hydraulic press to get one in my .270.

Me too, no longer have a 30.06, and plenty of guys were just throwing away the empties on the range.

well, maybe you should take a look in kuhnhausens mauser manual, there is a very nice picture of a US Model of 1917 that somebody stuffed an 8x57 into. the results were the rifle in numerous fragmented pieces. the reason it will fit is the 8x57 is shorter.

I was reluctant to try it at first but finally gave it a whirl for a winter project. All I had to do was trim, size, retrim and load. A second resizing wasn't required for mine as samples chambered easily in a Rem. and 5 mausers. About 40 pcs. are 270 and the rest is 3006. The 4350 loads work pretty good with the old pulled Turk bullets.

dure'in my try it cause i wanna learn to do it stage i was forming .270 from 30-06 and trimming.

that is until i carried along 5 rounds of the wrong ammo to a mornings hunt and had to sit in the truck while my uncle hunted.

now i'll do it....but only if no other way is possible or i have a quantity of other brass to the point that its so cheap its hard to turn down.

if i had brass but no gun for it i'd prolly do it tho
